Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

An attractive pour. Deep red color; typical of winter beers. A true roasted flavor is nicely balanced. Smooth with a slightly watery finish.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma. Reddish body, thin off-white head. Smooth malty flavor, but not much to it.

Bottle thanks to hopscotch. Pours with a large, off-white, creamy head and a hazy amber body. Good retention. Aroma of straw, currants, and bread. Taste is malty with cereal and some light fruits. Pretty boring! Lively bubbles and water like mouthfeel.

Pours a decently dark brown with a bit of a red tinge to it. A relatively thin and uninspired beer. The flavor profile does fit the season though with a bit of a nutty character, very faint caramel in the back and a finish full of toasted grain. All in all though there could be a little more body and complex flavors going on here.

Pours a dark burnt amber color with some nice red hues. A 2-finger thick foamy light beige head. Aroma is a malty carbonic brown sugar-covered raisin. The flavor has a lot of roasted nutty character with a slight cherry note on the back end. A very light coffee bitter in there to balance out the sweetness. Pretty thick and rich body. More cherry and spice come out as it warms.

Chestnut color with a taller slightly dissipating soft looking taupe head. Toasted grain and caramel aromas, nothing too exiting going on in the nose, an amber to brown ale scent. Light sweetness on toasted grains in the beginning. Little bit of herbal/floral hops in the middle. Slightly woody finish. I was not overwhelmed with this one at a tasting a few weeks ago and this bottle confirms my complacency toward this brew. I get neither malt depth that I would expect from an english strong nor either a hops bite or warming sensation. An amber by any other name...
