3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
This ale is so dark it can only be described as crepuscule.
this stygian brew with its warm, nutty, fruity, chocolate and more than just a tiny hint of cinnamon flavour begs to be consumed on frosty yuletide evening in the company of close friends.
A log fire burns gently at the back of ones mind as the dark liquid easily flows from the flagon to the heart.
This ale can be compared to A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens where warmth and friendship can be found in the darkest of places. be that Man or Brew.
one thing is for sure this ale will leave you in no doubt that christmas is here to stay.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cast at The Earl Grey Inn, Leek. A deep brown colour with a thick white head. Aroma of chocolate, raisin, soft toffee, a little smoke and subtle roasted malts. Taste of roasted malts, raisin, maybe prunes, some coffee, soft toffee, slight chocolate, a little smoke and subtle, late herbal hops. Medium to full bodied and soft carbonation. A lingering, fruity, roasted bitterness in the finish. A smooth, chocolatey, roasty, fruity Christmas beer. Decent flavours with a hint of smoke and quite easy drinking for a 6.3. Good.

On cask at Wilkes Head, Leek. Pours black brown with little head. Quite thin on the palate but some nice smoke, spice and easy drinking for the ABV. Tasted more like a strong mild to me.

Cask, Marble Arch Inn, Manchester. Deep dark brown with good thick off white head, good lace. Flavour is quite mellow, often a good thing aiding the whole neckability. Watching TUF 8 Junie Browning must die.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at the Derby Winter Beer Festival 2009. This nearly black beer has an enjoyable rich consistency. The flavours include aniseed and burnt sugar. Oddly, it reminded me somewhat of pumpernickel bread.

Cask@Derby Winter Beer Festival, 2009. Blackish/reddish beer with a smokey and fishy aroma. The flavour is herbal, fishy and smokey. Overall a plain smokey beer with a weird element of fishiness about it.

Cask (gravity) Notts BF 2005. Bliss. Solid black, big malts and lurking hops, wet tar, good chocolate, berries steeped in alcohol - there’s plenty going on here and it comes together wonderfully. <!-- br --><!-- br -->You can still buy this in the middle of summer round here at a Whim pub - and it tastes just as good.
