chris_o (4405), London, Greater London, England Jul 31, 2006 Bottled at the Royal Oak, Borough, June 2006. As Joeh says, this is clearly still being brewed somewhere, if not at Strangeways any more. No clues on the bottle and un unexpected find in a Harveys pub. Amber/copper colour with a distinct prickle from the carbonation. The aroma had a sweet, yeasty character that seemed almost Belgian to me. Sweet, malty flavour, again with some Belgian resonance. Then a harsh acid bitterness kicks in, leading to a rather astringent finish and aftertaste. I wonder whethere this has been retained as one of those UK style "export" beers that are actually brewed overseas? Weird but not unpleasant, at least to my palate.
imdownthepub (3995), Banbury, Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, England Apr 27, 2004 Bottled, Pasteurised. Amber coloured, carbonated, short head. Thin flavours for this ABV, little character with a wet cardboard flavour. Sweet toffeeish malt, pretty uninspiring. SilkTork (3853), Rochester, Kent, England Feb 6, 2004 Pastuerised bottle purchased at St Lawrence Tavern, Ramsgate. BBE Oct 04 I ordered a Young's Bitter, but it was very soapy, so the barmaid exchanged it for this bottle. I'm not sure it was such a good exchange. There is a light, prickly carbonation - but not exactly unpleasant. Dark amber colour. Soap and cardboard aroma. Brown sugar malt flavour. Not very good. jerc (3102), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 2, 2007 Bottle shared by Mabel from the Hastings Arms. Date coded NOV 07 which may or may not be a year!. Dark amber body with a small white head. Interesting aroma that can best be described as roast beef which is bizarre enough that I keep looking for something else, but that remains the most accurate descriptor. Moderate grains, perhaps lightly oxidized. Flavour is similarly grainy, light bitterness with similar vague hints at roast beef gravy however incongruous. Lightly musty character. Grabs a little bit at the back of the throat. Average palate borders on thin. A rather unique experience. rauchbier (2870), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Jan 15, 2008 Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze in Brigg. Dull bronze, moderate off white head and gentle condition. Slight sticky fruity stale maltiness like wet bar towels in the nose, some dry nuttiness in the mouth but turning bitter with time, lingering dry nutty finish with some stale malt notes.
