Adam Romanow is our third brewer apprentice. His release is an exploration into a newer beer style, the Black IPA. Black as night, bitter, with a full flavored Cascade hop profile and smooth finish. Named after Nyx, the mythological Greek goddess of night, who stood at the beginning of creation. As a beginning, we agree Adam is on to something. As he moves on, we raise a toast and hope you enjoy his beer as much as we do.

New description from the bottle:
Pray, friends, to the greek goddess of the night, a figure of exceptional power and beauty who stood at the beginning of creation.

When Nyx was originally released as part of out Apprentice Series in 2011, she quickly became one of our most sought after and requested beers. Now reborn into our permanent lineup, she roams the houses and glasses of discerning beer drinkers every autumn. This American Black Ale is as black as night, bitter, with a complex, bracing hop profile.

Beer had a great flavor...but finish was rough....really bitter and long lasting finish....would be great if bitterness was mellowed out...

Two year old bomber. Yeah, I know Iím not supposed to age it. will re-rate when I get a fresher example. Honestly though, this is pretty decent for a black IPA that sat in the back of my fridge for 2 years. Sure, the fresh piney hop aroma is long gone, but thereís still caramel, molasses and coffee on the nose, and the taste is fairly well balanced, still retaining some bitterness. Molasses and coffee up front, overextracted coffee and pine bitter in the finish. If youíve got an old bottle lying about, donít be afraid.this drinks like a thin, but balanced Porter.

Bottle from East Derry General Store. Aroma is a combination roasted malts/chocolate/fruit/hint of coffee and yeast. Appearance is opaque black with some sparkling on the outside of the glass and 1 finger tan creamy/foamy head with excellent retention and nice foamy lacing. Nice crackling sound to the head. Taste is complex robust coffee-like bitterness balanced with moderate malty sweetness and hoppy finish--almost a porter up until that last feature. Palate is medium bodied creamy texture with nice carbonation--itís there but complements the beer nicely rather than competes with it or demands attention. Finish is long, wet, mixture of the coffee-like bitterness and maltiness. Overall, this beer hits on all cylinders for me and has a lot going on for all the senses. Hard to find fault with anything and I canít put it down. Black IPAís can go too hoppy for me but this performs more of a tease with the hops and is quite unique. Yum!

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, thick black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of brownie, toffee, dark fruit, cocoa powder, slight anise, touch of vanilla, slight pine and spice. Taste is a mix of dark fruit, toffee, mint, some pine into some cocoa, slight roast, touch of brown sugar, finishing slightly sweet, bitter.

Bottle sample at the tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 2/5/15. Pitch black pour with a thick light brown head. Aroma of malt, roast, chocolate, molasses and coffee. Malty flavor with coffee and chocolate accents before a big roasty finish. Very nice.

Pours black into a tulip.. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Dark chocolate aromas. Soft and dry with dark chocolate and coffee front to back. Lasting sour charred resin finish.

Tap at Pizza Luce. Deep brown with a light brown head and light lacing. Piney, powdered sugar, burnt coffee and grass. Taste has a light sweet start, but is mostly bitter. Body is medium with a foamy feel.

Bottle from Winooski Beverage Warehouse... (Version I drank was fall 2014). Aroma: chocolate, coffee, roast, burned toast. Dark brown - black, medium frothy head. Taste and palate: medium head, lively carbonation, creamy, a little bit of citrus and pine up front but then bitter finish. Overall: would prefer to have more notes of citrus in this beer, imo the blend between stout and IPA isnít perfect. The beer is good but not the perfect Black IPA in my mind but still a really good stout...maybe I waited for too long before drinking it and all the citrus taste is gone or this fall 2014 version is less on the citrus side.

Bottle shared by Mike in NYC (summer 2013). Pours black-brown with a frothy, off-white head. Pretty classic CDA nose, a nice mix of roasted malts, somewhat juicy citrus fruits and toasted pine. Medium sweet flavor with nice burnt earth and roast, some oily pine, grapefruit. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Well balanced on the finish with a bit of piney resin, further citrus, grapefruit, some baking cocoa roast. Solid. One of the better White Birch beers Iíve had.
