COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This straw colored beer greets with an aroma of noble hops, pears and Belgian esters. The flavor follows nicely with a moderately spicy hop and Belgian yeast effect buoyed by a soft malt body. The finish is crisp and dry. We enjoy this beer with spicy foods, grilled steaks, grilled chicken and mandarin salad. Where you take it is only limited by your imagination.

Judging by the description on the brewery’s website, White Birch Belgian Pale Ale is a Belgian pale ale in name only. I can see that, since there isn’t anything about this beer that makes it stand out a Belgian-y. It does work as a pale ale in and of itself, which is commendable. A good balance of a solid malt base and hops that give it some spice, but don’t go overboard.

I poured a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled in July, 2014 and cost $6 ($0.27).

Appearance: Despite the brewery’s description, it’s actually more of a pure orange color over a very hazy body. Some carbonation is visible. Pours to an average-sized, white, frothy head which laces and retains quite well.

Smell: Fruity aroma of tangerine, apple and a hint of something herbal. Mild overall, though.

Taste: Since this beer may not be as Belgian-ish as its name implies, I can cut it some slack. There’s a pretty strong presence of American-style hop character going on here. West Coast-style citrus notes in the form on orange and maybe guava or papaya are present right away. But there’s also a slight peppery note, maybe basil or coriander or clove (though the beer is not actually brewed with any of these herbs as far as I can tell). An interesting flavor and spice combination; I’d be interested to see the hop schedule. As for the malty base, it’s definitely solid. Nothing in particular stands out, but at least there’s enough body here to keep this balanced. I really don’t get much Belgian character (e.g. banana, clove, etc.) though there is a bit of saison-like dryness here, but it’s not a dry beer per se. Overall, it’s plenty flavorful and interesting and that’s what makes for a good beer.

Drinkability: Though a tad “big” at 6.5% ABV, White Birch Belgian Pale Ale works well as summer brew. There’s an inherently refreshing quality to this palette – juicy notes while in the mouth, but nothing cloying or lingering in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel itself is perfectly medium-bodied; plenty of carbonation to keep it interesting, but not to the point of being difficult to drink. It’s remarkably smooth, actually. I had no trouble drinking the entire bomber myself.

Feb. 2014 dated 22 ounce bottle. My first beer from this brewery. Appearance: Copper with a durable and creamy bone-colored head. A large amount of visible carbonation. Aroma: A faint “soapy” character; earthy hops; bready malts; mildly funky Belgian yeast. Taste: Aged apples; wood chips; light bitterness; multi-grain bread; herbal and a bit earthy. . Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium+ soft carbonation. Overall: decent

At Jacob’s pickles with Taylor. Pours orange murky. Aroma is big ester, funk yeast. Taste is malty hay notes, milt earthy hops, and some muted Belgium fruit notes. The aroma is a little too belgiumy for me, but the taste is interesting and has a nice maltiness to it. I could drink a lot of it actually.

Bomber, Feb 14. Slight grassy/vegetal fruity aromas in the nose. Poured with huge head, dissipated slowly. Toward the end of the bomber, head was less evident. Nice Belgian lace in sides of my tulip. Poured light yellow/orange with slight haze. Distinct, but mild flavours from the Belgian yeast (strain?). Spicy/fruity on tongue. Effervescent/spritzy mouthfeel...well-attenuated/dry. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 ounce bottle into tulip, bottled in 2/2014. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon zest, pear, apple, white grape, light banana, bread, biscuit, herbal, grass, pepper, clove, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, a earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, pear, apple, white grape, light banana, bread, biscuit, herbal, grass, pepper, clove, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy bitterness/yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, pear, apple, white grape, light banana, bread, biscuit, pepper, clove, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good Belgian pale ale. Good balance, robustness, and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bomber, June 2013. Pours hazy golden with aggressive, fluffy white head that lasts and laces. Smells of citrus, esthers, and apple cider. Drinks smoothly with mild lingering bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Tastes of citrusy hops up front with toasty malt, apple/pear, and esthers. Crisp finish.

22oz bottle, shared. Bottled March 2013. I got the final pour. Mostly hazy orange amber color, with lots of fine yeast particles in the body. Thin off-white head. Leaves good reaches of lace. Medium body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Caramel malt, spicy hop, belgian yeast in the aroma. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet, lightly tangy. Decent belgian pale ale now, but it was probably much tastier fresh.. Others that tasted it seemed to enjoy it very much
