COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Adam Romanow is our third brewer apprentice. His release is an exploration into a newer beer style, the Black IPA. Black as night, bitter, with a full flavored Cascade hop profile and smooth finish. Named after Nyx, the mythological Greek goddess of night, who stood at the beginning of creation. As a beginning, we agree Adam is on to something. As he moves on, we raise a toast and hope you enjoy his beer as much as we do.

New description from the bottle:
Pray, friends, to the greek goddess of the night, a figure of exceptional power and beauty who stood at the beginning of creation.

When Nyx was originally released as part of out Apprentice Series in 2011, she quickly became one of our most sought after and requested beers. Now reborn into our permanent lineup, she roams the houses and glasses of discerning beer drinkers every autumn. This American Black Ale is as black as night, bitter, with a complex, bracing hop profile.

Bomber to tulip (shared by Brigadier). Looks good; a fairly opaque dark cola with beige lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Good beer.

Belated birthday gift from brother in law, 3 bombers with 2 new rates not too shabby. This pours thick motor oil consistency. Nose is nice of dark chocolate and earthy hops. Tastes of dark chocolate, coffee grounds, grapefruit, spruce, earth, resin, and ash. Low carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good beer.

Draft at Jack Brown’s, Harrisonburg. Pours a dark brown color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, earthy and green hops and a bit of leather. The taste is bitter roasted malts, chocolate, bitter hops. Medium bodied, average carbonation, lingering bitterness, decent balance.

Bomber. Pours pitch black with a big creamy head that fades slowly and leaves great lacing. Aroma is very creamy and chocolaty with a solid pine/floral hop presence. Taste is awesome, my kinda black IPA. Thick, rich, complex and hoppy. A faint sweetness at the start with rich chocolate and toast. Turns to strong, bitter, slightly burnt coffee in the middle. Finishes hoppy with pine and flowers and the burnt coffee taste remains. Also has a burnt wood, ashy taste that lingers. Thick body and a very nice creamy mouthfeel. Love this beer. It’s basically an overly hopped yet easy to drink stout. I think that’s what the best Black IPA’s are really. I’m gonna have to get more of this.

Bottle. Number 578. Pours black with a tall, dense, frothy tan head. Aroma is strong roasted malt, piney hops, light licorice, floral notes and dark chocolate. Taste ups the roasted malt and pine notes, soft chocolate mint, coffee , dark chocolate, floral hops and burnt caramel. Body is medium with a soft, creamy carbonation and light oiliness. Lingering but restrained bitterness throughout this. Ends with more roasted malt, pine, light licorice, mint chocolate, coffee and dark chocolate. Really nice!

Draft at Rustico Alexandria. Poured a pretty dark brown color, with a tan head. aroma was chocolate notes, a heck of a lot of roast in there with some bitter coffee notes. Flavor was a lot like the aroma, with plenty of notes of chocolate and bitter coffee, perhaps a bit more bitter than I had hoped.
