Adam Romanow is our third brewer apprentice. His release is an exploration into a newer beer style, the Black IPA. Black as night, bitter, with a full flavored Cascade hop profile and smooth finish. Named after Nyx, the mythological Greek goddess of night, who stood at the beginning of creation. As a beginning, we agree Adam is on to something. As he moves on, we raise a toast and hope you enjoy his beer as much as we do.

New description from the bottle:
Pray, friends, to the greek goddess of the night, a figure of exceptional power and beauty who stood at the beginning of creation.

When Nyx was originally released as part of out Apprentice Series in 2011, she quickly became one of our most sought after and requested beers. Now reborn into our permanent lineup, she roams the houses and glasses of discerning beer drinkers every autumn. This American Black Ale is as black as night, bitter, with a complex, bracing hop profile.

Great dark wintery beer. Smooth and drinkable with a great depth of flavor. Not super hoppy considering it's an IPA

A deep dark IPA with a thin dark brown head, very viscous. In aroma, dark chocolate with pungent resinous hops, dark fruits, surprisingly nice. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with espresso coffee grind,, grassy resinous hops, orange pulp, alcohol warmth, excellent with blue cheese. OttBottShare Dec 15 2013.

Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours about pitch black. Resinous, piney nose with slight burnt notes. Full bodied with a nice smoothness on the tongue. Solid roasted character with a heavy pine influence. Robust and flavorful. A pleasant surprise from White Birch.

Brigadier (3550) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - NOV 17, 2013
22 ounce bottle
Split with b3shine and tastybeer this was a fine black IPA picked up in the Cleveland area. I think it was solid enough for me to try another one or two of their beers when I verify the freshness. Maybe White Birch is an up and comer in the northeast.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base slides gracefully into the sample sized glass. Slick legs like a mocha porter sweep downwards. Plums, malt, and oily resins warm the air like a very hoppy porter.

Flavor / Palate - Coffee, cinnamon, and a spicy edge are a little bit of unexpected pleasure. The dry transition of molasses emerges after about ten seconds. Finally comes a resiny finish from a balanced hop presence. From start to finish this is a very enjoyable black IPA. The fact it is also relatively affordable only makes it more appealing.

Bomber to tulip (shared by Brigadier). Looks good; a fairly opaque dark cola with beige lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Good beer.

Belated birthday gift from brother in law, 3 bombers with 2 new rates not too shabby. This pours thick motor oil consistency. Nose is nice of dark chocolate and earthy hops. Tastes of dark chocolate, coffee grounds, grapefruit, spruce, earth, resin, and ash. Low carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good beer.
