4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle from East Derry General Store. Aroma is a combination roasted malts/chocolate/fruit/hint of coffee and yeast. Appearance is opaque black with some sparkling on the outside of the glass and 1 finger tan creamy/foamy head with excellent retention and nice foamy lacing. Nice crackling sound to the head. Taste is complex robust coffee-like bitterness balanced with moderate malty sweetness and hoppy finish--almost a porter up until that last feature. Palate is medium bodied creamy texture with nice carbonation--itís there but complements the beer nicely rather than competes with it or demands attention. Finish is long, wet, mixture of the coffee-like bitterness and maltiness. Overall, this beer hits on all cylinders for me and has a lot going on for all the senses. Hard to find fault with anything and I canít put it down. Black IPAís can go too hoppy for me but this performs more of a tease with the hops and is quite unique. Yum!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
It pours a nice dark black giving about a full one inch foamy tan head in my pint glass. Lacing coats the glass in a perfect full foaminess. The smell has chocolate, coffee, hops and roasted malts all combined very nicely. The taste is sweet and bitter in different aspects but still combined nicely as well. The palate is fairly heavy, but also could be closer to medium. Some acceptable harshness on the tongue as it should be considering the style of the beer. Overall, this is a very nice black ale that I would come back to.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber. Pours pitch black with a big creamy head that fades slowly and leaves great lacing. Aroma is very creamy and chocolaty with a solid pine/floral hop presence. Taste is awesome, my kinda black IPA. Thick, rich, complex and hoppy. A faint sweetness at the start with rich chocolate and toast. Turns to strong, bitter, slightly burnt coffee in the middle. Finishes hoppy with pine and flowers and the burnt coffee taste remains. Also has a burnt wood, ashy taste that lingers. Thick body and a very nice creamy mouthfeel. Love this beer. Itís basically an overly hopped yet easy to drink stout. I think thatís what the best Black IPAís are really. Iím gonna have to get more of this.

Bottle sample at the tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 2/5/15. Pitch black pour with a thick light brown head. Aroma of malt, roast, chocolate, molasses and coffee. Malty flavor with coffee and chocolate accents before a big roasty finish. Very nice.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep dark rich brown body with only a touch of light coming through at the bottom and a very nice, thick three centimetre tall rich lighter brown head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, a touch of coffee and bitterness of nuts and a good dose of citrus and piney hops - very nice and well balanced. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavour with hints of prunes and raisins with a good solid hoppy note that lasts quite a while. Aftertaste shows a ton of roasted malt, nuts, earth, some pit fruits, a touch of clay and a lot of bright hops to have a very nice balance even on the end. Overall, a very good Black IPA with a ton of nice flavours and an even better finish with some solid complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 09-March-2014 for US$5.99 sampled at home in Upstate New York in New Paltz on 09-May-2014.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 11/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Medium pine and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/sticky/resinous, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had this at the open house and today decided to open one of the bottles I bought then.
Pours a solid black color with a fluffy khaki head that slowly recedes to a ring on top. Smells of roast and hints of chocolate mixed with pine and citrus and a slight bit phenols. Taste is roasty with dark chocolate and hint of molasses. Bitter piney hop resin cuts through the roast very nicely. The finish leaves a long lingering hop and roasted grain thickly on my palette. Medium to thick body, moderate level of carbonation, creamy resinous mouthfeel. I seemed to notice the roasted grains a lot more from this bottle than I remember from the open house. Its possible a little age brought the roast out a little more. This beer blurs that line between IPA and stout in fact if you gave me this and told me it was a hoppy stout I wouldnít have argued with you. Tasty brew no matter what you call it.
