3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 puzzl (3177) - New York, New York, USA - OCT 25, 2009Tap at Night of the Funk. Nice attempt from a new brewer, it’s good to see people getting right on the Wild train. Of course, it would be better if they strived to impress on their first big chance rather than just settling in with the chaff, but so it goes. The aroma has a punchy, puckering tartness, unripe grapefruit — not intense, but apparent. The vanilla is an odd mix of vanilla, butter, and spinach (all from the Chardonnay chips, no doubt), with some off-base plywood in the finish. Much better in aroma than flavor.

Paid $15.00 @ White Birch. Bottle 10 of 156. Bottled July 2012, Batch SNHBF. Murky, cloudy gold color. Slow carbonation shows no head or retention. Nose is mostly oak with mild Brett. Taste is real dry oak, slightly tart fruits and minor notes of Brettanomyces. Quite acidic after taste. I really want to write more about this. And I really want to like this but… at best this is an average Wild brew. No complexity with a plastic or chemical type note that really takes away from the few decent flavors that are here.

The guys at Bert’s Better Beers convinced me to buy this. $17.95 was the price. Pouring into an ommegang glass. Bottled July 2011, Batch SNHBF.
A - Nice pop of the cork. Half-Finger light tan head that dissipated fast but left a great lacing on the glass. This is a light dark beer. It’s a mix between brown and red with very tiny bits of sediment laying around.
S - First thing I smell is the Brett yeast. Happy I identified this before reading the label which is a sign I’m getting better at picking out various yeast and hop scents in beers. there’s a light wild funk to this beer with some dark fruits.
T - Ugh. Um, this is hard to place really. The Brett yeast is way too funky for my taste, the dark fruits taste old and rotten and the wildness to this beer is akin to stale grape juice. Sour grapes, wood and some tart at the back of the tongue.
M - 10% carbonation, medium bodied, slick and drinkable from a mouth feel perspective.
O - White Birch got $18 more dollars from me. I keep buying their beers. Why do you have to keep letting me down?

Bottled 2/2011 Batch 1
Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a decent sized white head that dissipates rather quickly. Smells of tart fruits with lemons and cherries immediately coming to mind. Earthy herbal aromas as well as a slight bit of funk and a hint of band aids round out the nose. The taste is a little weird even for a wild ale. Slightly sweet candy sugar and a light fruitiness come in up front then are quickly gone. Lots of Belgian yeasty flavors still in here with a bit of herbal, plastic, and medicinal off flavors. Wow this one doesn’t taste at all like the aroma. Medium body and level of carbonation with a slick tart mouthfeel. Uhm yeah, this one didn’t do it for me.

750 ml. Bottle pour. Ice tea color, almost no white head. Not carbonated or tart enough. Decent. Not great.

(Draught) Pours a lightly hazy amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of horseblanket, sweet tarts, herbs, and herb. Flavor of grass, some medicinal, herbs, and brett with a dry oak, somewhat bitter finish.

Pouring at the Night of the Funk event in Boston. Pours a hazy murky brown. This was weird. Smelled like caramel, with some hints of cinnamon. Tastes a bit like those little button candies on the long piece of paper, and a bit of licorice. This was just odd.

Sample at Night of the Funk 2009: Deep hazy copper pour. The aroma is all off/unwanted phenolics of plastic and band aid. Slick body with a flavor of rubber, band aid, terrible solventy and medicinal characteristics- probably the worst of the fest that year.
