I’m the first taster for this beer of this unknown brewery. Strange to see that this italian brewery brews in the Flemish region. Label says :barleywine:, not sure about, this is a belgian strong dark ale with soft white foamy hat and round body. I like as they have played with malts and yeast. Wishful to discover oher beer from this new brewery.

Dark brown, big foam. Caramel, plums, chocolate, dried fruits, licorice, candy sugar, sweet but balanced well with dark malts. Strong complex taste, body full and soft. Probably old bottle. not a true barleywine, but label says ’’belgian’’, it’s a big quadrupel!

33cl Bottle picked up at De Bierboom (Brugge) about a year ago: opened at home on 3rd March 2014. Poured into a Westmalle challice. The bottle had been in my fridge for over a month but it still gushed out when opened, with some hitting the table cloth before I got it over the glass. Once settled I had a good looking chalice of deep ruby red/brown with a tanned foaming head on top. The nose a lovely brown sugared infused maltiness with a dark hedgerow fruit hint, sweet, yet earthy. Rich, heavy and alcoholic: this is one great beer. Certainly malty and dark fruit sweet in nature, it has a smooth and almost creamy body feel, velvet is a good word to use: this is a velvet brew. The earthiness mentioned in the smell also appears in the taste and this helps to balance the malty molasses that try to take over the taste completely. I love these sort of brews: too sweet for their own good at times, but whether it’s a Barley Wine or a Quad, or whatever, it’s a damn good beer.

KombatAle (116) - New Brunswick, CANADA - MAY 24, 2014
75cl bottle Dark brown, beige foam. Nose of caramel, plum, dried figs, chocolate, brown and candy sugar, toffee, biscuits, licorice, nuts. Full body with a soft mouthfeel. Hints of toffee, caramel, dark fruits, plum, dried fruits, licorice, chocolaty biscuits, nuts, candy sugar. Long aftertaste. Not a real english or american barleywine, sure there is belgian yeast inside, so a belgian quad, but it doesn’t matter, complex and full of taste!

Bottle 33cl, a dark brown beer with huge off white head, ok lacing and retention. Nose is on red and over ripped fruits, sweet caramel and light spices. Aroma is on a sweet malty basis, creamy caramel with red fruit touch, cherry, banana, typical quadruple yeast notes, bubble gum and cinnamon notes, good complexity, candy sugar, light bitterness. Light banana at the finish with vinous touch, light prune too. Excellent interpretation of the barley wine style on a belgian way, excellent brew work.

Brown with a beige head. subtile hints of chocolate, roasted touch. small peated smokiness in the nose. taste: dark slightly roasted malts, again chocolate. nuts. some spicyness in the back, bit of pepper. MF sweet, finish is long-ish and well balanced. Some alcohol, but again, well balanced, warm and welcoming. surprisingly easy to drink for this 10.5% beer. overall, very good barley whine finish. well balanced. One of the better in the White Pony Series ?
