   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 3/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 10/20
Koelschtrinker (11038) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 2, 2011

Draught at the brewpub. Good smoke aroma. Clear chestnut colour. Good stable tan head. The flavour starts off with a little smoke, mild and clean. Medium malt body. Some roasted nut flavour. Slightly grainy finish, quite good though.

Maria (10176) - Thisted, DENMARK - JUL 26, 2010
It’s dark amber with a creamy head and the aroma has notes of malt, syrup and light smoke. The flavour is moderately sweet with notes of malt, caramel, light syrup and nuts, and the smoke could be stronger.

Beershine (5218) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - SEP 4, 2009
Draft @ brewery, in krug leaving ring lacing. It’s a rauchbier to the max! The campfire aroma leaps out of the krug. Palate is not oily, is a tad thin but very clean. Not sweet. Perfect rauchbier flavors smoked wood, YUM, bacon everywhere, in aromas and flavors, is dry, smokey and bitter all same time. Distinguished, delicious, now in my top 3 of all Franconian rauchbiers! Thank you to Per for encouraging us to go here!!

Ceramic mug. I just asked for a rauchbier and got one...same brew though. Nicely smokey aroma. Smooth, such balanced beech smoke, caramel malts. The most Heller-esque rauchbier I’ve found elsewhere. Damn fine, balanced rauchbier.

omhper (19935) - Tyresö, SWEDEN - AUG 6, 2009
Draught at the brewpub (as Dunkles Kellerbier). Served in stein with firm creamy head. Probably amberish coloured. Marked tarry smoke nose. Dry and medium bodied with clean rounded mouthfeel. Very direct smoke flavour, countered only by light caramel. Not as deep and soft as Schlenkerla, but with nore intense tarry smoke. One of the most distinguishable beers in the whole of Franconia.

pivnizub (9004) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - JUL 17, 2008
Bottle (purchased at the Brauerei): Clear, light amber coloured, slowly collapsing off-white lacy head; dry malty nose, but mainly smoked aromas like ham or charcoal detectable; solid sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; some caramalt, a tinge of vanilla and smoky flavours in the moderate bitter-sweet finish. Wow, a well quaffable, unexpected "smoky Dunkel".......

Quack-Duck (8065) - Down South, GERMANY - JUN 8, 2008
bottle, großes Dankeschön ins Ruhrgebiet! Slightly hazy, amber-brown colour, large head. Smokey nose. I don’t normally read ratings before I drink a beer, but after the first sip I checked the style here. It says Dunkel on the label, but the lovely smokey flavours are overwhelming. So indeed it is a smoked, and a very good one. Full-bodied, spicy, malty, slightly hoppy and with the right amount of smokeyness. What a lovely surprise.

MoritzF (8590) - Bochum, GERMANY - MAY 20, 2008
(bottle) Slightly unclear, dark amber colour with a short but persistent beige foamy head. Sweet, toast-malty aroma with a distinctive smokey note; a touch of caramel and even a whiff of herbal and minimal citrousy hops are detectable in the background. Light to moderate bitter flavour with a light malty sweetness, light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Toasty and smokey malty taste with caramel and herbal hops; quite dry and bitter finish with a smoke-malty and herbal hoppy aftertaste. A pleasant surprise: a smoked beer, camouflaged as a Dunkel (20.05.08).
