Cherry Pie! Cherry Pie! Cherry Pie! At 6.6% abv this light and fruity ale is black in color, although your palate would never know it. Black Angel is fermented on the Wicked Wild yeast and then moved into stripped down Four Roses Barrels and aged on tart cherries, sweet cherries and Italian plums. The white oak and roast malt add notes of vanilla and graham-cracker that when blended with the tart sweetness of the fruit bring out this robust cherry pie flavor that is unmistakable. This sour is a beautiful marriage of fruit and beer that always leaves you wishing the glass was full.

Was afraid they only served this on Fridays, but lo and behold there it was on a Saturday afternoon. I suppose that makes up for them not actually having Dark Age tapped at 3pm on the Thursday before. Oh well. Surprisingly dark, nearly black pour with a solid little beige head. Nose of cherry skins, oak, vanilla, cocoa, and other dark malt notes. Taste shows all those dark malts balanced nicely with acetic notes and cherries. Really good, but I don’t know... almost too drinkable? Complex wasn’t necessarily a word I’d use to describe it, but I can’t complain about it either. I could drink a ton of it.

Strong sour backed by cherries, and that carries the beer. Smooth malt and very dark, but all sour cherries backed by a slightly woody malt and touch of roasted grain deep sweetness. Good, but a one and done kind of beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle gifted by sonnycheeba and snoworsummer. Thanks! The pour is interesting. Dark dark opaque with quickly dissipating toffee colored head. Aroma is super tart with some fruity notes with some dark maltiness. Taste is really nice, the berries are rampant with hints of chocolate and tart. Interesting mix.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours dark brown and sits black with a small, creamy, mushroom-colored head. Decent retention. The fruity aroma is a luxuriant mélange of dark berries, dark chocolate, fudge and vanilla. Medium-bodied with laid-back carbonation. The flavor is sour, bourbony and fruity – there are buckets of cherries here. No big-time, alcohol booziness accompanies the tasty bourbon component. Nice, snappy, tart finish. Big thanks to newcigarz for supplying this world-class beer!

Draft at the Funkatorium. Pours very dark brown with a fizzy beige head. Tastes like sour cherries, fermenting blackberries, booze, raisin, earthy malt. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like booze, fermenting blackberry, cherry, and earthy malt.

Tap at Funkatorium. Pours opaque black. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, cherries, and faint caramel. Flavor is rich and sweet with plenty of cherry, vanilla, and oak; light tartness, faint bourbon, and a dry oaky finish. Light/medium body.

Probably the most complex beer I’ve had all year courtesy my Secret Santa. Thanks man. Aroma was nice. Sour cherry and vinegar. Great preamble. Pour was a nice deep dark black with thin light tan film for a head. Taste was delicious. Looking at a black beer like this I wouldn’t expect it to be sour, but it was nicely sour with the vinegar and sour cherry dominating the sip. As it warmed it got more sour, biting on the top sides of the mouth. The finish reveals the light vanilla and bourbon notes. They come up from nowhere and make this beer so interestingly different. Nice strong carbonation. Love it

7.2% ABV bottle into snifter glass, opaque dark brown color with tan lacing. Aroma notes of cherries, dark fruit, vanilla, oak and sour tartness. Taste adds light roast, tart dark cherries, tad cocoa, yeast funk and light earthiness. Light-medium body, low carbonation, soft with lingering oak tart finish. Very fun sipper, glad I have a few bottles.

Sample at the brewpub. Dark brown color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of cherries, figs and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of tart cherries, oaky vanilla and malt. The finish is moderately sour with a cherry aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
