The Freak is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8.4% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of all the big West Coast hops give this beer it’s citrusy weedy nose and big dank hop flavor. Drinking this beer is like stuffing your face into a bag of fresh hops while eating a tangerine. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch or over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In following with the classic style of the West Coast double sugar plays a big part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter we welcome you to the Freak Show.

BOD 9/1/15. Clear copper pour with a touch of garnet. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Outstanding nose of citrus (orange, tangerine), slightly dank and spruce over a solid biscuit with subtle notes of caramel. A slightly spicy element is also noted. Light medium body that is smooth. Below normal carbonation with little effervescence in the middle and moderate effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is outstanding. Very hop forward and mildly bittered with a low level of complexity. Balance is attempted, but falls a bit short. The hop flavors of the nose are all present and semi-separate. Citrus leads then flows to dank in the middle over a very subtle biscuit. From the middle on, it becomes rather dry and a slight alcohol astringency is evident. The finish is a dry slow fade of rind, dank and notes of alcohol. As it warms, balance improves in the middle providing a slightly sweet (biscuit and caramel) influence. This one is at it’s best slightly below 65 degrees.

500 mL bottle poured into a wine glass. Light amber color. Typical strong burst of hoppy tones and evergreen aromas. Medium off-white head with hugging lace that remains throughout. Light carbonation. Pleasant bitterness you expect from a good IPA. Citrus more in the smell than taste. Really cannot tell the alcohol content. Balanced and simple, with lingering pleasant spices on tongue. May not be Headtopper ratings but all flavors blend really well together, with consistent palate throughout making it stand out. Worth seeking out in NC!

Clear golden color with white head. Aroma is really dank and resiny. Earthy hops, chive, herbs, grass and pine needles. Taste follows with the same notes, starts balanced but the bitterness increases towards the finish. Body is soft and carbonation is just right for the style. Alcohol is really well hidden, making the beer dangerously drinkable. Overall this is a great double IPA.

Light golden pour with just a slight haze to it, persistent bubbly white head that leaves a thin web of lacing, Light cat urine like aroma, a touch of spearmint. The body was golden amber in color, with high clarity. The head was two fingers thick. The pour fit perfectly in a Duvel tulip. The smell of the beer was herbal, and dank, with aromas of pine, juniper, spruce, and some grapefruit. The taste was earthy and spicy, showcasing the hops big time. I could taste lots of resin, and some black pepper. The caramel malt was there as well, providing some butterscotch candy like sweetness. There was some fruity flavors mid palette, and the finish was clean and short. The feel of the beer was medium dense, with a touch of stickiness. Nice IPA, more similar to many West Coast offerings, than others from the mountains of North Carolina.

Pours straw gold and cold with a massive thick and soapy white head. Wet lacing. Beautiful. Aroma is dank weed-like hops with some notes of caramel and sweet citrus. Taste is full on from the get-go. Hop forward and active on the palate. Lemon and grapefruit citrus overtones and resiny bitterness. Short and without great depth and complexity, but this is hop-lovers nirvana. Quite drinkable for a high gravity DIPA. Excellent. Best NC beer?

Pale with a thick head. Hops are huge in this one and hop heads are rejoicing. Me on the other hand, I think this is very tasty but bitterness is heavy handed towards grapefruit and lemon without too much variety.
