COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Freak is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8.4% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of all the big West Coast hops give this beer it’s citrusy weedy nose and big dank hop flavor. Drinking this beer is like stuffing your face into a bag of fresh hops while eating a tangerine. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch or over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In following with the classic style of the West Coast double sugar plays a big part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Golden color with little to no white head. Aroma is light citrus hops. Flavor is slightly hoppy with a clean finish. Rated from a growler, remember it being a little more assertive at the brewery.

The beer is bright gold in color. It has good clarity and a nice white head. Bubbles swirl up readily even out of this stubby growler. Lots of lacing. Decent retention. The head dies down after a couple minutes, not bad for a beer above 8% abv. The aroma is full of sweet hop flavors. There’s big citrus, tropical notes, some pine and a floral background. Fruit-wise, I get tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon, lime, mild grape and mild berry. It’s not as huge on the new, fancy hop flavors as some recent hoppy beers, but it excels in execution. The hops are expressed wonderfully with no off notes. There’s light background sweetness from the malt that blends into the hop fruitiness. The taste is full of hop flavor with a perfect balance of sweetness and moderate bitterness. Starts off with floral/grape hoppiness and malt sweetness. Then, pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit take over, before a finish of pine, pepper and citrus rind. The feel is light and smooth. Normal carbonation, though again, it’s a growler. It strongly reminds me of Pliny. The flavor and intensity of the hops is strong but it’s still a very easy beer to like because everything is held in a very careful balance. Excellent stuff.

Pint on tap. Clear orange golden with a lasting spit of cream. Nose is dank green herb with touches of citrus, resin and caramel. Tastes of the same mix. Medium body has smooth medium carbonation and is definitely dry.

Big growler brought by April and Bentley, thanks! Pours orange gold with a big white head. Aroma is heavy grapefruit citrus, mild dank. Taste is caramel malt backbone and lots of grapefruit peel and pine resin hop.

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2014 On tap. Pours orange. Aroma of dank hops. Taste is bitter, dank, mild citrus In the aftertaste. Sticks around for a bit. Is like a bit more balance in the hops with some citrus, just my preference.

Hoppy!! This beer is double dry hopped with big West Coast hops. Amazingly with all those hops you’re left with huge flavor but a low bitterness aftertaste. Awesome beer!

Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a clear golden color with a white head. The aroma was of resiny hops, grass, and some grapefruit. The taste was of toasted malts, earth and resiny hops, with more citrus in the backend along with some grass. Tasty.

Nicely executed DIPA. An abundance of bitter hops and solid malt sweetness backing it up.

On draft. Kind of a standard IPA with a high-ish ABV. No particularly distinct flavor profiles. Just average.
