Made in honor of Johnny Cash’s birthday, this 7.5% porter is brewed with dried thyme and touch of smoked malt, and aged for two months in Four Roses bourbon barrels. Flavors of woody herbs, vanilla, and coffee roll into a rich bourbon finish. Have a couple of these and you’ll be singing “Hey Porter! Hey Porter! Would you tell me the time?”

On tap at the brewery. Looks pleasant enough--a dark brown, nearly black porter with a foamy but not too rich head and nice lacing. Nose shows some woody notes (not really in a bourbon-vanilla sense, more in a sniffing a tree sense). A touch of smoke and maybe thyme, but the combination of the smoke and the thyme comes across like graphite and the taste is marred by sort of tasting like putting the sharp end of a pencil in your mouth. Still, the other notes of the beer (chocolate, some coffee, a hint of vanilla) are strong enough to not make this a wholly bad beer. I wanted to root for it, but I couldn’t get the pencil thing out of my head.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft t the brewpub. Dark brown to black color. Nose of initial sweetness and bourbon. Taste of bourbon, followed by roast and strong hop bitterness. The mid palate was almost astringent. Probably better aged.
