Hoppy Pale Ale

Napoleon Complex is a small-statured pale ale with a larger-than-life attitude. Ignoring the industry standard of diminutive hop presence and mild manner, this pale ale will have most IPAís contemplating their inadequacy. Little beer, big flavor, even bigger ego.

Growler that I bought for TURDFERGSON, which he then generously shared with me. Nose of lovely citrusy hops; some resin and skunk as well. Just mad freshness. Taste is slightly thin, as expected, but still full of flavor. Extra points for clocking in under 5%. I could (and hopefully will) drink a lot of this.

After weeks of hunting for this in Atlanta, finally found it during my annual Asheville beer pilgrimage. Pours clear golden with a thick and somewhat persistent eggshell head. Hops dominate the aroma, bearing equal parts wood and resin; fresh malt and citrus are the supporting troops. Flavor is mainly hoppy, with some citrus character - more lemony than anything else - and a little malt. Mouthfeel is definitely not regal, thin and lacking fizz. Still, this should please the "little corporal" in you. BTW, Napoleon was not short - in fact, he was taller than average.

Bottle thanks to Markey. Nose is real earthy and dirty, but not in a danky way, but more of an actual dirt an dungeon way. Pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Taste is similar to aroma, light pine and citrus, but an overwhelmingly earthy taste. Not too bitter and crisp malt. ok

Bottle via PUBíR. Pours clear golden with 2-fingers of white, well-laced head. Nose is hops, pine, tangerine, pineapple, white pepper, mango. Tastes hoppy, resiny, with a high IBU level, overall bitterness, and notes of pineapple, orange, and lemon as it warmed.

Tap. The smell is pine, fruit, bright, big, fresh, good. The look is golden, bright, a good lacing head. The taste is clean, crisp, a decent bitterness, pine, and grapefruit peel.

Straight hop water. Lacks body. Big dank cat box hop nose. Not enough malt to keep up. Comes across thin, piny and bitter. Iím not digging this whole sessionable hop-forward IPA thing. Forget that this is billed as a pale ale. BS. Itís a session IPA.

Thanks Danny! Pretty fantastic pale ale. Nice golden clear color. Dank, fruity, somewhat grassy. Crisp, clean, and blended well. Could drink all day. Bonus points for the chess-centered label.

4/21/16. 330mL bottle - thanks, Matt! Clear golden pour under a nice off-white head, great lacing. Looks awesome, actually. Nice hop aroma, dank, tropical fruits, loads of citrus, some fresh cut grass. Great flavor as well, dank, yet smooth, citrus, guava. Awesome stuff!
