Hoppy Pale Ale

Napoleon Complex is a small-statured pale ale with a larger-than-life attitude. Ignoring the industry standard of diminutive hop presence and mild manner, this pale ale will have most IPA’s contemplating their inadequacy. Little beer, big flavor, even bigger ego.

Growler that I bought for TURDFERGSON, which he then generously shared with me. Nose of lovely citrusy hops; some resin and skunk as well. Just mad freshness. Taste is slightly thin, as expected, but still full of flavor. Extra points for clocking in under 5%. I could (and hopefully will) drink a lot of this.

12 oz bottle from near the brewery with a bottling date of August 2016. Served in a snifter in Sept. 2016. Nice label. Look: Nice looking light copper-amber body but a very short head with poor retention and minimal lacing. Flavor: loads of hop flavor, matching the aroma in quality. near medium bitterness. Aroma: fruity/floral hops with some grassy notes. Feel: medium-light body; medium carbonation; exceptionally dry finish.

Good bitterness, very drinkable. Fresh bottle from Julio’s. Green hops, and yet its a pale. Worth trying for hopheads.

Draft at Bru Craft. Clear bright yellow gold pour with a fizzy/foamy off-white head. Lots of lace. Glossy citrus herbal hops. Lemon verbena. Pineapple. Heart of palm. Thyme. Lemongrass. Spring onion. Maybe some oats in the middle. Has a strong plastic edge. Not feeling this one

Pours medium orange with a half finger white head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, pine, bready malts, grassy, herbal notes, and some light tropical fruits. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a slightly watery mouthfeel and a semi dry, semi-moderatrly bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, hoppy, refreshing APA.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 7/1/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, light pine, light honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, pine, light honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon/orange peel, pine, bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky, and fairly grainy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is a very nice standard pale ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Clear golden pour with thick creamy medium white head, some lacing, smells of grain, kind of pilsner esque, medium body, some crispness, a bit of citrus, not very complex but very balanced and drinkable, refreshing, rating this high due to balance but aside from that there isn’t much to it

Light citrus fruits, lemon, lime, some pine coming up. Clear gold, small, creamy, white head. Medium bitter. Citrus and tropical fruits, mango, sweet orange, tangerine, grain malts, lively carbonation, light bodied, bitter and dry finish. Decent APA, nice palate but maybe a touch too carbonated for me. Keg at A Taste of Carolina, Charlotte.
