3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle at Tony/Jim BA Birthday Extravaganza 2013 (Western Springs, IL). Pours a nice deeper brownish orange hue, firmer dark haze in the middle tapers out to a nice orange glow. Big cakey tannish head atop stays as a firm cakey layer, decent lacing and good stick around. Aromas are soap, bread and gentle orange. Some cherry, oak and vanilla. Gentle warmth tapers out. A bit sweet overall. Initial is toffee, toast, some soap and gentle spuice. Vanillin and oak, touches of earth, sweetness. Initial is a bit soapy, sweet, caramel and florals, touches of citrus and red fruit. A bit oxidized, toast, mellow oak and vanilla. Too sweet and a bit non descript. Middle is a bit sweet, soapy and caramel elements. Fruit, gentle toast and toffee. Some oak, vanillin. Not much influence, a firmer sticky body. Backend is a touch dry but still sweet. Finish is a bit sticky and forgetable. Meh. Least favorite of the group.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Baileys Taproom. Colour...cloudy amber with a thin ecru head. Nose...loaded with burnt cotton candy, dark toffee and treacle. Palate...frothy, blatantly oaky and bitingly tannic. The booze is big and thereís huge waves of bitter toffee and butterscotch that coalesces with molasses cream and Seville oranges. The finish is bitter and oaky. I wonder how this will age??

Drought. Hazy dark amber with small beige foamy head, fruity aroma, low carbonation, tastes like coffee, berries and caramel, long finish with alcohol taste on your palate. Thoroughly enjoyable and positively intoxicating!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650 ml bottle from bev4less. Pours a hazy roan brown color with a small off-white head that slowly recedes to a film. The aroma is toffee, caramel, vanilla and a trace of sherry. The taste, like the nose, is loaded with caramel, toffee and vanilla--backed nicely by a spicy hop profile that accentuates the caramels without dominating them. The palate was full and smooth with soft carbonation. The finish was somewhat short and disappointing. Overall: This is a very mellow brew, admirable, but lacking in big bold flavors to make this a top tier beer. Also at $23.00 per bottle it is a very poor value for the money.

I had this right after the rye barrel aged one. I started to do a side-by-side with all three. However...after finishing one at an ABV of 10% you tend to forget what your original plan would be. Either way, this one was good, but not as good at the Rye barrel aged one IMO.

Bomber. Old note - not sure if I this was shared up at Proof or I had it in Portland. Brief rate: vanilla, dark sugar, oak, toffee. 7.4

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: NOV 2, 2013 Bottle pours out with a clear copper body that supports a white head. The aroma offers up sweet malts, citrus notes, a light degree of molasses and then lightly brown sugar dusted peaches. The taste delivers sweetness with malts, caramel malts and then some mildly tart notes of pine hops mixing with under ripe apricot. Well... ok. It doesnít seem to come together very well.

Tasted this back-to-back with the other Widmer/CCBs. Pours red with a small white head. Nose is caramel, malt, oak. Flavor is dominated by the oak but also has some malt, caramel, wood in there. Not as good as the bourbon barrel version, I thought.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle:   Fiery caramel, slight haze, small sudsy white head, sparce lacing.   Oak and alcohol on the nose, pale caramel, did I mention alcohol.   Very slight vanilla and graham cracker.   Soft caramel and alcohol up front, soft vanilla, graham cracker, and oak.   Slightly better than the Bourbon version.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Not as thick, viscous, or big in body as I would have thought for a huge $20 bomber.   Not as green as the Bourbon, but still not that big.   Soft caramel, oak, and vanilla lingers.   $20 for this... not worth it.   Stick to draught.
