Drawing inspiration from an Old Fashioned cocktail recipe and the Gentlemen’s Clubs where the cocktail was first served over 100 years ago, this collaboration beer brings together two breweries from opposite ends of the country and ingredients from the home states of both breweries. Using an Old Ale recipe as the base beer, Gentlemen’s Club was brewed with cherries and oranges, Alchemy, Sorachi Ace and Pacifica hops, and hand-selected specialty malts to mirror the qualities typically found in an Old Fashioned cocktail. The beer was aged on three different woods: bourbon barrels, rye whiskey barrels and new oak spirals, resulting in three unique versions of the beer, each offering a slightly different take on the same age-old recipe.

On tap at Apex on the last day of Stout Fest. Dark clear amber with a creamy head. Sweet dry tropical fruitiness, vanilla, bourbon, some orange rind, full body and moderate carbonation, bitter on the finish but everything is quite strong in terms of flavours and just doesn’t seem to blend well together.

Taster at RBWG 2014 grand tasting - thanks to the person who shared this! Mildly hazy amber orange red color. Thin khaki off-white head. Couple dots of lace. Good bigger dark fruit, caramel malt aromas. Light barrel influence noticeable. Moderate sweet taste, light tannic, moderate bitter. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter, but it finishes more dry. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter kind of soft carbonation. More dry finish. Awesome stuff. Pretty well done.

On tap at Apex, pours a murky dark orangey maroon with a medium beige / tan head. Aroma brings out moderate bourbon notes, vanilla and dark fruits. Flavour brings out loads of vanilla notes, bourbon, followed by dark fruit and caramel. Extremely well-balanced, and definitely the best of the trio. Dangerously drinkable.
