Our take on the traditional Bavarian Hefeweizens that inspired Kurt and Rob to brew the Original American Hefeweizen in 1986.

12 ounce bottle from Harris Teeter Charlottesville Barracks, opened 6/26/14. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium sized fizzy white head. Fair head retention. Aroma of wheat, tropical fruits and a yeasty finish. The taste is yeast, wheat, citrus and tropical notes in the finish. Thin bodied, low carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a hazy earthy yellow with a white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a rich wheat note with a hint of sweet banana and growing clove notes. Flavor showcases the wheat as well with only a bit of sweetness and clove.

On tap at FredFest 2013. Pours cloudy blonde with a decent white head and a toffee aroma. There is a medium-bodied wheat flavor with a very dry finish.

On tap Widmer, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings pungent notes of clove, followed by banana. Flavour is very smooth and balanced, with lots of clove and banana balancing each other out. Dry and vibrant - correctly made to style. Very nice hef.

Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured cloudy yellow with a thick forming head. Aroma of bananas, cloves, phenols. Quite effervescent with nice esters and yeast spice. Hints of vanilla, and whetted malt sweetness. German ale yeast vastly improves Widmer’s signature Hefe.

Aroma is bubblegum, wheat and a hint of sweetness. The flavor is bubblegum, wheat, mild sweetness/cookie dough and a slightly tangy/mostly smooth finish. Why they didn’t call this Hefeweizen as opposed to the original which wasn’t I don’t know, but it was a solid hefe either way.

Bottle. Pours a darker golden color with a moderate white head on it. Nose has a bit of citrus in there over top of a rather earthy yeast. Taste is actually a little sweet up front and remains mildly sweet throughout, with some citrus coming through subtly. It’s OK, but nothing special for me.

Pour is a cloudy blonde with a small white head. Aroma is corriander and clove. Kind of a surprise in a good way. Flavor is lots of wheat esters some bubblegum and banana. Maybe a touch watery but this was overall and pretty kickass hefe. I hope this makes it into their full lineup.

This is billed as being part of a series of experimental beers. It’s a hefeweizen. I don’t have anything against the style but making one hardly makes your brewery a bastion of experimentation. I guess it is a bit on the strong side. It’s a cloudy orange beer and pretty much headless. Kinda just looks like I poured myself a glass of slightly muddy water. This is very much a yeasty banana-centric hefe and it is pretty well done aside from the fact that it is a little bit oversweet and heavy. Because of this, it doesn’t really have the light but creamy texture that makes this style so great. There is at least a firm enough bitterness in the finish to bring some balance though so I guess points for effort. This works OK I suppose but I wish they would have either made it a bit dryer or upped the gravity to be a weizenbock or something. Where it sits now is kind of an uncomfortable balance.

12 oz bottle from Mile High Wine & Spirits into a pint glass. Gold, pale and hazy with a small white head. Aroma of strong banana, spicy clove, sweet malts, bread, hay, and light floral notes. Similar flavor, starts out sweet and fruity and moves to a crisp, light bitter finish. Average body with ample carbonation. Pretty refreshing, I like it.
