Beaver (588), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jun 26, 2006 Updated: Oct 13, 200612 oz bottle dated 3/21/06. Pours a deep reddish brown with a large fluffy light tan head that is long lasting and coats the glass with lacing.
The aroma is caramel malts and grassy piney hops.
The flavor is slightly sweet bready caramel malts initially followed by a good deal of piney hop bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste, but is balanced by a little residual sweetness. There’s a little melon fruitiness as well. The mouthfeel is medium to full with velvety carbonation.
Overall, a pleasant surprise. It’s a drinkable, nicely hopped red (makes for a good IPA).
Scarecro (18), USA Jun 23, 2006 poured a reddish amber color. very heavy on the gut. a good after 5 pm beer. The bitterness was a bit strong. A solid Red Ale. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Jun 11, 2006 12oz bottle via trade with cbkschubert - Thanks Craig! - Pours deep red with a creamy beige head that stays very well and laces the sides of the glass. Aromas of grapefruit hops over caramel malts. Flavor is quite malty sweet to begin with. Lots of caramel, a little rye flavor and some roasted malts but finish is mostly grapefruit and floral hops. Somewhat bitter on the finish but pretty creamy on the palate. Medium body. Pretty nice beer. mkobes (2103), paramus, New Jersey, USA Jun 10, 2006 Bottle. Deep red copper in color with a nice lacing. Very fruity hoppy and malty aroma. Earthy and piney hops. Caramel notes. Malty and hoppy flavor. Roasty. Sweet. Finish is dry. Medium bodied. Smooth. Very drinkable. Well balanced.
Nice beer. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA Jun 10, 2006 12 oz bottle fom Wohlfs. Rich red color with a small head and lots of lacing. Aroma is of chewy PNW hops and caramel. Taste is on the sweeter side with the piney hops shortly following. I had to look at the style to see it was an IPA, cause I was thinking this is the best amber I’ve ever had. It’s really balanced but just a bit too sweet to be a great IPA. Very nice though. billk (300), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA Jun 5, 2006 Updated: Jun 6, 2006bottle 12 oz. Clear dark amber/copper w good carb & beige head that held up just OK, moderate lace. Aroma is med roast caramel malt with floral, spicey, piney hops. Flavor is the same with the darker roasted chocolate malt noticible. Alcohol is somewhat pronounced with the rather dull, cooked together flavors. A bit sweet & stickey w a noticable metallic taste. Well into medium bodied but lacking a clean well defined flavor especially in the malt department. The finish has a very noticable bitterness from the bittering hops. This offering was just OK. schwaiger (90), Laramie, Wyoming, USA May 30, 2006 12 oz bottle. Poured a jewel red bronze - quite lovely - with a small, fully diminishing off-white head. Huge aroma of grapefruit, both fruit and rind, some pine, and a little alcohol. Upon first gulp, I am overwhelmed by the sensation of plunging one’s head into a heap of pine needles - which, if you haven’t ever done, you really have missed something. Somewhat sweet in the fore, definitely bitter in the finish. About halfway through I was surprised by a green mintiness that had been hiding while the glass was cold. I love being surprised by a beer. A long, pleasantly bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation, very smooth and creamy. There are a lot of hops in here - more than I think I’ve had in a red - but it’s done well and not overpoweringly so. Not bad at all, and truth be told, quite a lot more than I was expecting. I’ll buy this again. mikebeertaster (94), vancouver, Washington, USA May 28, 2006 Good and hoppy, has a nice strong bitter taste too it. You don’t find a lot of reds around here so this is a nice one to get while we can.
