presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada May 28, 2006 Very nice hoppy aroma. Dark red copper colour. Warm malty flavour with delicious hop finish. Interesting red-IPA. AleDrinker (1090), Sunnyvale, California, USA May 21, 2006 Solid beer from the Widmer’s, I usually don’t care for their stuff. Aroma is mostly caramel with a bit of roasted flavors. Flavor is very sweet with a good amount of bitterness. Not much flavoring or aroma hops here, it’s all for bittering. Oh, and the red color... Nice. jackamackson (127), USA May 21, 2006 dark red pour with tan/white frothy head. nice malty aroma with citrus hop notes. mellow malty body with a touch of citrus in the finish. very drinkable and tasty. Floral, citrus hop aroma with a huge malt backbone of sweet caramel. Copper body with a pinky thin, fluffy white head. Very bitter fore is full of grapefruit rind-like hops. Not as malty as it smells, but there are some sweeter malt undertones that run long into the finish and mark a clear delineation for the early bitter hops. This is a decent tasting beer, though for my personal palate it’s too bitter in the fore. Not a style I go for, but I’d have this again. Especially with spicy food. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Apr 30, 2006 Updated: Nov 20, 200812 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a deep amber color with a one a 1/4 finger thick off white head. Nice lacing. Has a light citrus, herbal hops, and caramel malt aroma and flavor. Medium body. Decent beer. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Apr 23, 2006 (12 oz bottle: Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA) Bottling date: 23-Feb-06. I was expecting more mediocrity from Widmer, but the immediate burst of sweet orange citrus and grapefruit aromas are a really nice introduction to this beer. Taking my first sip, what I notice first is the wonderful balance. Very flavorful, plenty of bright, citrusy hops and bitterness, balanced by lots of sweet, caramel maltiness. Mild vegetal character from the hops, and that shows up in the nose after awhile too. It has that pleasant chalkiness in the flavor and mouthfeel that I enjoy. Medium-full in body, a coating mouthfeel, semi-dry and crisp finish, well-carbonated. Slow-to-form head is off-white in color and short-lived, subsiding to a filmy layer, yet the head leaves a ring of lace near the top of the glass with vertical streaks hanging down. To me, this is one of the finest Widmer products I’ve had in a bottle ever. Not mind-blowing or anything, but a very solid, well-constructed and tasty offering from the Bros. Don’t skip this one because it’s a Widmer product. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA Apr 20, 2006 Bottled. Pours a slighly Brune color of amber. Sweet, malty aroma. Citrus hop flavor with a sweet malt backbone. Good bitter balance. Clean lingering finish. A pretty nice beer! kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 18, 2006 12 oz bottle, via Bück Dich. Pours a dark reddish copper with a 1 cm beige head composed of fine bubbles. Clear with no sediment in bottle. Nice citrusy hop aroma, some sweet malt below, but hops are center stage. Lesser fruity and caramel malt notes. Flavor has quite a bit of bitterness to cut thru the caramel sweetness in the base. Finish is abrupt and lightly bitter. No sense of the 7% ABV. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and almost sticky from all the malt. Finish is a little cloying. Overall, a pretty decent beer, especially for what I was expecting seeing it labeled as a "Red Ale". It confounds me when brewers label stuff so ambiguously.
