Give the gift of beer! More specifically, Brrr! The Widmer Brothers have handcrafted a special ale for the holiday season: a generous red ale. Not quite excessively hopped, with candy sweetness and a velvety finish. Perfect for celebrations. Prost!

"what a nice surprise. This has the taste of an aromatic ipa with candy sugar in the finish. not overly complex, but that combo works really well together!

Backlog rating on 12-21-2012 (Bottle) The appearance is a medium sized ivory head that mostly diminishes, transparent orange body, slow rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing adorns my glass. The aroma is malt and pine hops. The flavor is light bitter, pine hops, caramel malt, and this beer has a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. The ABV is well masked and this beer is not overly hoppy tasting.

Transfer from BA review on 1-3-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – Pours a dark red/mahogany color with a thick off-white head. The thick head fades slowly over time to leave a nice level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – The nose is much hoppier then I would have expected. A mix of grapefruit citrus and pine are the heaviest of the nose, although there is a light earthy hop smell as well. Beyond the hop aromas there are some smells of a fruity nature of orange and cherry as well as a caramel sweetness. Taste – The taste starts out with a big hoppy and light roasted malt flavor. The hop initially is largely of a citrus nature up front with some pine mixed within. The pine hop gets stronger as the flavor advances further. While the pine increases, a light sweetness of caramel and some orange come to the tongue. The orange turns to a more orange peel flavor more toward the end with the pine getting rather strong by this time. With the advent of some light spice flavors of nutmeg and allspice, a pine heavy hopped and bitter citrus flavor are left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is rather average in its creaminess with a carbonation level that was rather average as well. The moderate body and carbonation suited the hoppy and spicy flavors well, while allowing enough sweetness to shine through and maintaining a good drinkability. Overall – A rather hop heavy winter warmer. It is quite delicious and one to experience if you have a chance.

Bottle from Whispering Willows Liquor: Created a frothy layer of head which ended up dissipating rather quickly while the liquid was a dark honey color. As for the nose, there is a subtle balance between lightly toasted caramel malt and a dosage of green hop pellets. The flavor is the same as the aroma with a decent hop bite and a semi sweet taste of caramel/toffee fashioned malts than hang in the balance. I missed out and was never able to find this beer when it was named W06 NW Red Ale, so I’m happy to have finally found it in distribution even if it wasn’t that special. Diggin’ the name of this beer though—how clever.

[Bottle] Ruddy brown pour with little head on the top. Aroma is of caramel malts, nutmeg and light alcohol. Flavor is of boozy caramel, spicy phenols, alcohol, hops, brown sugar and some fruit. Moderate bitterness comes out more in the finish. Overall, the flavors could have come together a little better in this. Tasting notes from early 2012.

Straggler from a Widmer sample pack. Nice dark copper appearance with a touch of white head. Perfect blend of hops and malt in the nose. Got this in spring, but makes me want to start a fire. Taste delivers on what the nose promised--a perfect hop-malt balance that would pair wonderfully with a hockey game or holiday get-together. After taste is rich, with a hint of chocolate or coffee. This sets the standard for winter ales.

Hoppy winter ale. Not a strong aroma but faint touches of floral hops with sweet malts. A little earthy. Nice dark or burnt caramel color with a white head. Weighty and carbonated palate. Hops hit you first with a mild woodsy and malty base. This drinks like a hoppy red ale. Not much spice as some holiday ales. The bourbon version is better.
