AxeMaster221 (343), Portland, Oregon, USA Sep 1, 2003 Deep redish amber color, clear, with a thin white head that left before I got to it on the sample tray. Little aroma, very sweet, with fruity esthers. Wish I knew the ABV on this one, seemed fairly high, but hard to tell as it was pretty well masked.
raphael (277), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 10, 2008 what is in my mouth? roasted malt thinned with water, whiskey, dark cheries & maybe a stray cigarette butt. aroma of roasted malt, dark syrup (sans maple.) dark brown with ruby highlights, no head. great in the mouth--- numbing the tongue and all around. a good intensity, but hte pieces dont fit together Bradrcr (617), Renton, Washington, USA Feb 9, 2008 1/19/08 On draught at the Portland brewhouse. Aroma is smoky, malt-forward, with no hop character and some dark fruit character in the background. Appearance is amber/brown with a very low head. Flavor is rich, sweet and fruity, with malt dominance followed by moderate flora-free bittering and a low alcoholic note. Mouthfeel is medium/high bodied with medium carb texture and good alcoholic warmth. Overall, great complexity, but probably wouldn’t go for more than one. boFNjackson (540), Portland, Oregon, USA Nov 9, 2006 tap at the Widmer brew pub... dark ruby color with brown head. presence of alcohol, malt and sweetness maybe from chocolate. very complex but very drinkable. BuckeyeBoy (1181), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 7, 2006 On Tap At Widmer Brothers brewery/pub in Portland OR. pours out a nice rich brown topped with a tan head. A little bit of sweet of caramel. jennajlover (101), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 22, 2006 On tap at the Widmer Gasthaus, Portland brewhouse.Smells amazing. Tons of malty sweetness that oozes with caramel and raisins. Even the most vigorous pour only produced a thin ring that I wouldn’t even call head. The beer is dark brown in color with a ruby glow. The lack of carbonation in this beer is almost to the point of flat, and it makes for a dissapointly watery mouthfeel. It isn’t as sweet as the aroma suggests, but then that’s not such a bad thing. There is plenty of caramel and toffee flavors up front. Towards the end there is a bit of alcohol and a faint bitterness that is more astringent then hop induced. A decent doppelbock with an amazing aroma.
