Downward Spiral is an imperial version of our Hopside Down India-style Pale Lager that was aged on new oak spirals. This bold wood-aged beer is an aggressively hopped, cold-fermented brew that brings together the clean, crisp finish of a lager with the hop character of an IPA, balanced by distinct oak flavors and aromas. Wood is good. Prost!

Compared to a DIPA, this really does seem crisp and drinkable. The wood-aging seems a bit unnecessary, but perhaps it helped to take the edge of this brew. It’s like a pils on steroids, which leans more towards citrus flavors rather than grass or spruce. Decent malt backbone with some toast and bread.

Tap at Mason Lounge. Filtered looking orange-tan. White, off-white head. This is my kind of beer. Expertly lagered, but also has the massive orange citrus bite on top of the tasty golden malt. The oak adds another layer of depth, really making this a solid beer. Cool, piny, refreshing mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Aroma of citrus, wheat, and wood. Taste is woody, citrus, bready. Alcohol is present. Head diminishes within 5 minutes, a very weird off yellow color.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a transparent gold with foamy eggshell head. Smells of citrus hops and oak with a bit of sweetness. Tastes like it smes with an average mouthfeel. A solid example of the style.

Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Polygamy Porter pint glass From: 55 Degree Wine in Glendale, Calif. Price: $5.99 Purchased: March 28, 2014 Consumed: March 29, 2014 Misc.: Born on date of Sept. 23, 2013 Poured a caramel, orange, murky color with two fingers of frothy white head. Some bubbles coming up from the bottom. Minimal lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average retention from the bottom. Smelled a pleasant mix on the nose. Got citrus hops first, followed by pine, soap, lime and some floral hops, immediately followed by oak, vanilla and Jack Daniels. Very boozy, but probably matches nine percent ABV. Tasted similar to the nose, which was all over the place. Got citrus hops, soapy pine, then dominated by boozy oak. Also bourbon, vanilla and bitter nickel. Light body. Oily texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, boozy finish. A really good attempt but I thought it could have been better overall.

Poured clear deep copper with a thin, foamy head. Aroma is bread and pine. Taste is lemon rind and grass, with a well-rounded finish. Interesting blend of styles.

Medium amber color with a off white head. Aroma was just ok very lite and hard to enjoy maybe will open up at a warmer temp. A creamy beer with great hop and wood flavors. The creamyness of this beer is my favorite part.

Citrusy hoppy aroma combine with the light malt aroma in this slightly hazy orangeish reddish brew with small white head and tiny boubbles rising. The taste is complex. I taste the the sweet maltiness and the hops in this beer. The aftertaste a slight earthy flavor in the after taste and the hops make my tongue almost tingle in a good way. The body is surprisingly light for as sweet as it tastes. Good job making the lager crisp but still be an imperial. Worth a buy.

Strange idea to do an imperial IPL then add in aging on oak spirals. Almost sounds more home brew. Initially smells like sawdust (good to me) and the oak spirals okay a prominent role. But I am also getting orange pekoe notes and some grapefruit too. Interesting and good.

Bottle:   Says oak but comes across as a big thick rich meaty maltiness that’s aged on cedar.   Tastes like those big Euro Pils beers but on cedar.   Yeah, big woodiness that seems like cedar, but could be very young white oak.   Moderate sweetness, big strong grassy/hay notes, with a HUGE woody aspect to it.   Comes across as a cross between oak and cedar.   Very woody and interesting, clean, big, sweet, and a bit different.   Backside shows a bit more of a hoppy character.   Very woody.
