Unholy_Brewing (286), Melbourne, Australia Aug 14, 2008 ...draft at Ruby Tuesday’s. Well, I didn’t expect much from this, so I wasn’t that dissappointed. Light clearish yellow, with a small white head that faded almost immediately. Orange on the nose, but that was mostly from the orange slice it was served with. Body was light, bland, and overly carbonated, with a hint of wheat, but not much. Finish was watery, and lacked flavor. Not good. wetherel (976), Carlsbad, California, USA Aug 9, 2008 On tap at Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside. I like Hefes, so here goes. Sort of BMCish aroma. cloudy yellow-amber color. Looks good. Nice foamy microbubble head. Some vegetal, possibly corn aroma. Much better with lemon juice. Drinkable. My wife liked it a lot. tedovertu (105), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Aug 7, 2008 This is the weakest hefeweizen I have ever tried. Extremely bland. Not even close to the full taste of an Ayinger. Tastes kind of like a MGD mixed with 1/8 German hefeweizen. At least they got the appearance to look presentable. Average head with virtually no lacing. Murky medium amber/yellow body. Way to hoppy to be a respectable hefe. Beer_2000 (1164), Kristiansand, Norway Aug 7, 2008 355 ml bottle. Hazy golden body with a small white head. Aroma is fruity, but relatively neutral. Flavor is refreshing, fruity and quite typical German hefeweisen, maybe a bit more bitter. A hint of banana, citrus and yeast but quite ordinary. A bit thin body. otakuden (54), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Aug 5, 2008 Widmer pours a lovely cloudy golden orange into my proper hefeweizen glass. Orange yeast and cinnamon hits my nose before gliding down my throat. Lemon mingles with the orange and lightly bitter hop spice to add a bit of tartness to the hefe. Easily drinkable, there is a bit of chewy yeasty wheat goodness which lasts throughout the beer. A hefty body to carry the orange, lemon rind zest and hop spice zing which encompasses the Widmer Hefeweizen.
I don’t really detect any banana or clove flavors which are very common in German hefeweizens. A more citrusy interpretation of the traditional hefeweizen style, Widmer is a good example of an American hefeweizen from the beervana west coast. Is it the best hefe I have ever drunk, no. but it gets points of nostalgia from me, along with taste and originality.
