3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA. Pours very dark, but halogen burns through with ruby. A slight tan head. Very hoppy aroma. Citrus or resin or both. Medium plus body with fairly mild carbonation. Flavor is a little dark roast/toast, but thereís a lot of, call it resin and citrus, hop. Heck it even seems a little floral. It finishes bitter in a tasty fashion. With hot bits. Pretty good ale.

Delightful deep crimson in color with a nice white head. Citric hops leap forth followed by slight caramel. Nice, rich flavor, nice hoppiness balanced by slight dark malts. Enough crystal magic to keep me interested. Very full bodied. Lingering roast. This is a very nice CDA - could be a bit hoppier.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a tan head. Big grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and light summer fruit flavor. Medium bodied. Decent bitterness. Grapefruit and light summer fruit lingers. Very light dark malts in background, but you may not notice unless hunting for them.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(12oz bottle dated dec 09, 09) pours deep ruby brown with nice tan head. Nose of juicy citrus, toastiness and burnt caramel. Taste of light bitter grapefruit, toasty grains, caramel, and spicy hops. Finish and carbonation are cola-like and near perfect. Also very creamy. Liked quite a bit.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle-bottled on Dec 10 09-pours deep crimson red (not black!) with a small tight and frothy off-white head. Nose is equal parts pine/earthy hops and burnt chocolate-not very complex, but very nice! Flavors show the hops bigtime in the front followed by a sweet finish of earthy hops and burnt toasty notes. These black IPAís are kind of a trend, but i like them! long piney/earthy finish with some sweetness, but definately not a detracting sweetness. never becomes cloying. a lite plastic taste comes in the finish, maybe slight oxidization, but for the age of this beer, its holding up quite nice. I can see this one being a hop monster when its fresh. probably the best beer i have had from Widmer.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
Poured from the bottle into a Sam Adams sensory glass. It pours with a thin, filmy head, and a deep chocolate brown/black color. Not much to say here, itís not really exciting looking beer. The smell is pretty nice - there is a nice hint of malt sweetness, bright, fresh hops, with a hint of mint and strawberries. Initially I was put-off by the taste, but it opened up pretty nicely. Itís mild in flavor, really. Caramel malts, some honey floral hops, some frutiness, a mild roast maltiness... overall not different, or interesting, to be honest. The mouthfeel is totally fine and fitting for the style. Honestly, Iím not a big fan of this. I donít get the "black" IPA thing in general... roast flavors donít make much sense here.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A nice deep brown with with a tan head. Decent aroma. At first sip it tastes like an IPA but the finish is something else because of the malty, sweet finish. I enjoyed it but nothing special.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
pours a dark brown under a thin, light head. Nose is hops with malt roastieness just under the surface. First taste is the hops, followed immediately strong roasted grain flavor malt. The roast adds a sharpness to the hop bitterness, but Iím wanting more citrus in the hops and more sweetness in the malt. I donít hate this beer, but I donít know why they called it an IPA with this blend. I donít find it terrible, but also donít think it is anything especially unusual. Mouth feel is creamy and the finish carries a slightly nutty flavor in the roasted malt. Iíd pull this one out of the cooler at the picnic over a lot of others, but wouldnít drive to the store to get one.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
In the glass, a beautiful dark brown and ruby color with an off-white head. Nice roasted/charred malt aroma which follows into the taste. A bitter dark chocolate flavor follows with a creamy texture on the tongue. The hops, while quite obviously present here as they should be for an IPA, are exceeding well balanced with the charred malt body. If you were to imagine what a black IPA should taste like, this is it. All around excellent beer; I hope weíll be seeing this again in the future.
