On tap at flying saucer. Pours a dark brown almost black with a small frothy beige head. The aroma is a floral hop with pine. Medium mouthfeel with a nice balance of malt with pibey hops and a nice bitter finish. Hides the alcohol well making it easy to drink.

The beer pours black with a cream-colored head. The aroma is piney hops with some roasted malts. The flavor is mainly piney hops, but there is some citrus hops in there as well. There is also a roasted malt backbone which is very interesting. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

12 oz bottle into shaker. Aroma is totally IPA--piney hops, citrus; little malt presence in the nose. Considering the black malt and roasted barley added, I was expecting some porter-like aromas. None here. Pours black with a medium dissipating head, leaving some lacework. Reddish tones come out when held up to the light. Taste is totally IPA, as well. Very little malt (roasted or otherwise) here. The only other black IPA I’ve had other than this is Laughing Dog’s Dogzilla. That beer is totally a cross between porter and IPA. This beer is totally porter in appearance, but completely IPA in flavor. After another taste I realize there is a faint roasted character lurking in the background, but it is truly faint. If tasted blind with an opaque mug, I wouldn’t know this was a "black IPA." Tastes like an average IPA to me. Carbonation is medium. Finish is bitter. Nothing truly unique here, but nothing offensive, either. It’s a good beer, but not as adventurous as the label would have one believe.

Dark burnt sugar color. Thin head. Nose is sweet and malty with a hint of hops. Taste is confusing. Starts sweet and malty ends like an ipa.

Pours dark brown to black into the class with ruby red highlights. Aroma is citrusy with a chocolaty sweetness. Almost like a orange creamsicle. Flavor is malty and toasty at first with a bitterness that comes toward the end and stays on the tongue. An interesting beer. The sweetness of the malt really subdues the hops, which I’m not sure was the intention of the brewer so it possibly could need some more flavor/bittering hops. Either way it tastes really good and is an interesting beer if nothing else.

On tap on FW Gman. Very dark occluded appearance with rosy tints near the edges. Fat hop profile. Very sappy and pine with strong earth currents. Taste is strong sweet hop with a dry undertow. Cereal grains push through on the secondary; almost a fruity pebbles flavor. Aftertaste fills all these in with a dryer than naught finish. Very solid.
