2011 Seasonal BARREL AGED BRRRBON is an amazing beer, enjoyed it today at the Foodie Festival in Westport CT. Its one of the more impressive offerings from one of the most impressive craft brewers nationwide. One of the highlights of an event that featured a diverse variety from Widmer, BluePoint, Goose Island, Southern Tier and a host of locals.
Widmer Brothers states: FOLLOWING THE INITIAL BREWING PROCESS OF BRRR, THE BEER WAS GIVEN A FRESH CHARGE OF HOPS DURING SECONDARY FERMENTATION AND THEN PUT INTO KENTUCKY BOURBON BARRELS AND AGED FOR FOUR MONTHS. AFTER BARREL AGING, THE BEER WAS ALLOWED A TERTIARY FERMENTATION FOR FINAL CONDITIONING BEFORE RELEASE.
22oz bottle.
Nice auburn copper pour.
Frothy with sweet smell reminiscent of oak with vanilla. Little bourbon smell mild not overpowering. Texture is slick with taste of sweetness coupled with some alcohol but not negative. Solid hops composition with a little bit of a burnt earthy smell and feel. Finishes spicy like the Falconer IPA but not as hoppy just peppery smoothness. Really enjoy the texture and taste of this beer. There’s essentially no cloying bitterness as its nicely hopped but maintains a 40 IBU and its potent at 9%.
It’s not hot like a bourbon but if you don’t like bourbon or whiskey you probably won’t like this but I highly recommend it as one of my favorites from Widmer where I think the SXNW and the Pitch Black and the Falconer IPA are spectacular.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 rxeight (433) - Illinois, USA - OCT 27, 2012
UPDATED: NOV 25, 2012 Draft. Deep amber color. Lots of oak flavor in this one. Very faint bourbon taste in this one. Sweet dry finish. Definately more barrel than bourbon. For a beer is decent, for a BBA it’s on the low end.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 DentonShanks (25) - California, USA - OCT 23, 2012
A great mixture of smokiness, darkness, and caramelness. Smells a smoky sweet, smooth with almost no bite. 9.4% alcohol, but has minimal alcohol taste. Actually wish it left a stronger taste in your mouth.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 rejtable (811) - Ontario, CANADA - OCT 11, 2012
Pours orange brown with an initial foamy head that ends up as a lasting cover. Nose is cereal and some vanilla. Aromas are cereal, vanilla, maybe some butter, and a hint of raisins. Mouth is medium oily with medium carbonation. Nice enough alcohol very well hidden.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 NikkTwist (887) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 11, 2012
Draft at Moriartys. Clear dark amber pour with a foamy head that left quickly. Lots of big bourbon notes on the nose. Tastes of burnt sugar cane. Wood chips. Kerosene. Red pepper. Plum wine. Touch of vanilla extract. Medium-light palate, maybe a bit too thin to hold the darker notes. Still beats most winter seasonals.
