4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
2011 Seasonal BARREL AGED BRRRBON is an amazing beer, enjoyed it today at the Foodie Festival in Westport CT. Its one of the more impressive offerings from one of the most impressive craft brewers nationwide. One of the highlights of an event that featured a diverse variety from Widmer, BluePoint, Goose Island, Southern Tier and a host of locals.
Widmer Brothers states: FOLLOWING THE INITIAL BREWING PROCESS OF BRRR, THE BEER WAS GIVEN A FRESH CHARGE OF HOPS DURING SECONDARY FERMENTATION AND THEN PUT INTO KENTUCKY BOURBON BARRELS AND AGED FOR FOUR MONTHS. AFTER BARREL AGING, THE BEER WAS ALLOWED A TERTIARY FERMENTATION FOR FINAL CONDITIONING BEFORE RELEASE.
Nice auburn copper pour.
Frothy with sweet smell reminiscent of oak with vanilla. Little bourbon smell mild not overpowering. Texture is slick with taste of sweetness coupled with some alcohol but not negative. Solid hops composition with a little bit of a burnt earthy smell and feel. Finishes spicy like the Falconer IPA but not as hoppy just peppery smoothness. Really enjoy the texture and taste of this beer. There’s essentially no cloying bitterness as its nicely hopped but maintains a 40 IBU and its potent at 9%.
It’s not hot like a bourbon but if you don’t like bourbon or whiskey you probably won’t like this but I highly recommend it as one of my favorites from Widmer where I think the SXNW and the Pitch Black and the Falconer IPA are spectacular.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a dark amber from bomber from Hopey. Definite bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, spice and an omnipresent sweetness that becomes cloying. Some balance/ bitterness in the finish and an attempt to balance, but falls short. Leaves a nice warm feeling on the palate- alcohol is obvious. Smooth mouthfeel. Would be better by a fire with some food to temper sweetness. More interesting than enjoyable.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
650 ml bottle, Limited Edition No. 13 (Winter 2013), Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.4%. Consists apparently of 90% ale aged in bourbon barrels, and 10% ale which is not. Reddish brown colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Distinct aroma of bourbon whiskey, vanilla and oak, also sweetish malts. Medium sweet flavour, again distinct notes of bourbon, vanilla, oak and malts, very moderate hops. Warming mouthfeel. Very tasty beer, but it requires that you like bourbon - fortunately I do.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Vintage 2011. Lots of burbon on the nose. Tatstes of black licorice, cloves, slight bit of chocolate really drinkable. Not. Chewy as some of these beers tend to be. Costco had vintages 11-13 priced to move. Great way to do a verticals.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2012 bomber from Costco of all places. Nice dark mahogany pour with a light brown head. Vanilla with caramel and malt aromas. Flavor was muted spices from the BRRR with a smooth oak barrel finish with hints of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and a touch of leather. Great beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 vintage from bottle. Thin bodied, aroma of bourbon and cough syrup. Little flavorless, alcohol comes through a bit much for this type. Finish wasn’t bad, but the flavor in the finish reminded me of being sick as a child and my mom spoon-feeding me cough syrup. Price (at Costco) was reasonable, but I wouldn’t drink another.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark amber from 22 oz bottle. with medium lasting off white head. The aroma is caramel, sugar, hops, and definitely bourbon. The bourbon is pronounced in the taste with strong malt and warming alcohol. The body is medium with a bitter boubony finish. Not really a complex brew but enjoyable for what it is.
