4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 glkaiser (1214) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 3, 2009
UPDATED: OCT 4, 2009 22oz bottle. Pour is a murky reddish brown with thin head. Berries and malt come through in the aroma. Vanilla, cherry and oak hit the tongue first, quickly followed by an intense mix of roasted malts, with lots of chocolate coming through. Alcohol is noticeable, but isn’t overbearing for the ABV. Quite complex with the malt, cherries and oak all adding significant flavor. Finishes with a little tart cherry and minimal balancing bitterness. Maybe a bit thin, but with all the flavor packed in I barely notice. Lovely. Should be interesting with a year of age.

22 oz bottle served in a tulip. Pour is mahogany with a red hue and two inches of tan head. Nose is malt, caramel, cherries, oak, vanilla, and dark fruit. Taste is identical to the nose, but the main theme is a caramel cherry muffin ... very strange, but quite delicious! There are not many offerings from the brewer, nor have I previously heard of them, but if this is any indication of their quality, I will try anything they brew!

Pours mahogany brown with tan head, smells of barley and oak. The taste is very mellow, a dry full grain flavor but medium body. The cherry taste is there but mute as the 2 1/2 years did their work. The beer has a really nice sweetness to go with the light spiciness of the grain and wood with a light alcohol bite. The oak is very apparent and has a fresh new wood flavor. The finish is straight forward, wood and the earthy grain with a robust lasting blend of the flavors and light herbal German hops.

A nice lil DB. Pours a dark amber brown color with a decent head. Smella of sweet wet hay. Full nectar with creamy effers. A sweet brew with traditional flavors of bread and coffee. Theres a defined black cherry concentrate going on with toasted oak. A nice balancing act performed by a bit of acid in the background. The finish lingers. A good brew indeed. Who ever wrote the commercial description needs to take a lesson in common beer sense. A Dopplebock can’t be an ale.

22oz bottle. Pours a dark but clear brown with amber and ruby highlights and a thin tan head that leaves just a few spots of lace on the glass. The aroma is rich malts - yum. There is a touch of alcohol and an even softer touch of oak (and perhaps a hint of tobacco? something earthy like that). There is some cherry in the nose, too - not tart cherry but rather a vague pungent fruitiness reminiscent of cherries - and it is light and surprisingly complementary to the malts. The flavor is quite malty. Light caramel, lots of toffee, lots of rich toasty melanoidin, and a wonderful complementary note of cherries that is somewhat muted. The cherry flavor (and a light tartness) grow towards the mid-palate, and there is a light and neutral bitterness present there as well. The finish is slightly woody and still malty with continuing flavors of cherry. The mouthfeel is full-bodied - slightly syrupy but not in a bad way but rather in a calming fireside-sippin’ kind of way. Overall - very good.

Pours medium brown, like tanned leather. Really big head that was off white. Well done. Malt characters with some hops and just a faint hint of cherry. Great cherry in the nose. Nicely complex.

Sampled on 12/3/2009. This dopplebock pours a dark brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is malts, oak and cherries. Perhaps some vanilla. A medium bodied dopplebock. The malts are caramel, fruity and semi-sweet. The cherry flavors are semi sweet. Nice woody oakiness. A great balance of wood, caramel malt and cherries. Smooth taste. Nice carbonation. A very drinkable beer. Gonna put a few away to bottle age. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Poured out with little head and a cloudy mahogany color. Got a slight cold today so this one might be off, aroma was sweet caramel and I could almost taste the rich malt, only a slight hint of hops. The taste was perfect for the aroma and left me with that wonderful sweet taste on my tongue. Overall this has gone down nicely.
