You can really taste the molasses and rum on the finish despite the front being a smooth brown ale flavor. Good beer but not amazing

thin tannish head .. the brew is the expected deep brown.. Nose is oaky with plenty of dry molasses notes and sorta raisin elements... a bit of nutty maltiness with warmth. Pretty oaky.. some rummy notes when it is colder that dissipate as it warms.. Thick and malty.. the molasses punctuates the flavor with a bit of sulfur.. again a bit too much rum for my liking.. malty flavors are thick enough to pull from a deck of deScriptors... toast, nutty, dark caramel, "brown malt".. etc. In the end, this is too sweet for me.. the residual sugars combine with the malty essences to just go overboard. Palate is pretty heavy with a decent carbonation but not enough bubbles to help strip the lingering flavors away for even a second.

Others have described Kill Devil as an interesting or different beer, but if anything, Widmer Brotherís mistakingly labeled this slightly above average Barley Wine a Brown. This would have been fine had I wanted a Barley Wine. I didnít, though. Overall, Kill Devil is a prime example of the experimentation thatís become token of American Breweries turning into something confusing despite itís ambitions.

This was a draft pour at the RBSG. Poured amber, maybe even copper, with an off-white head. Nose caramel malts with a hint of rum. Medium plus body. Flavor is rich with some sugar, vanilla, and dark fruit. The rum and sugar combine for a nice finish. Very nice.

Rated based on notes taken 27 Sep 2012 -- Thatís a pretty dang tasty brew. Lots of deep dark sweetness that is accentuated by the barrel aging. Didnít get much rum, but it was a smooth beer.

On tap @ Widmer. Dark amber colored pour with a thin off-white head. Nose of spicy rum and ginger with a touch of chili powder. Lots of caramel, toasted wood, and vanilla. Maybe a little sugary...slight citrus marmalade along with some dark fruits. Certainly quite sweet on the tongue, but luckily not really cloying or syrupy. Rum adds a nice but subtle spice character that cuts the sugar character a bit. Pretty decent, actually.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy copper with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong rum, caramel, molasses. Medium mouth, very sweet, caramel, rum, really enjoyed this.
