2013.05.17 - Widmer Brothers Kill Devil Ale ’13 - 22oz bottle in pint glass. 2013 Vintage.
Aroma: sweetness, almost honey.
Appearance: Pours around 12 on SRM scale. Around Newcastle Brown Ale in color. Not much carbonation but a token slick/cap lingers.
Taste: Part way between a brown ale and a strong ale, basically. Front end is kind of brown sugar-y, and fades to back end that is a more generic sweetness. Almost honey-like, but presumably the sugar noted in ingredients.
Palate/Mouthfeel: Fairly light, a mild creaminess. Traces of alcohol, warmth on back end.

22 ounce bottle - $12.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a medium reddish-brown body, a bit garnet-hued, with a less-than-clear clarity. Medium-small, off-white head.
Smell: Toasty, caramel malts, a bit sweetish in scent, with faint, faint hints of chocolate. Also, varied, rum-dipped fruit (albeit light) hints of cherry, fig, and plum.
Taste: Brown sugar and darkened caramel, a resounding dark toasted malt with slight shards of chocolate, of roast. Medium sweetness. As with the aroma, there’s a good, pleasing fruitiness. Lightly herbal, earthy hops with a modest bitterness. Veins of rum, molasses noted. Sweetish, malty, smooth finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Overall: It’s good. I mean, everyone likes a nice, big, malty brown, right?
Everyone likes a brown ale.

Pours pretty dark brown with a 1/4 inch beige head. Lots of rum and treacle in the aroma. Full bodied. Flavor is massively treacle with rum and some citrus and arguably pear. It burns slightly. I’m thinking this massively flavorful ale will age well. Brilliant concoction.

Sample at Hal & Al’s. Pours a hazy brown color with a medium khaki head that recedes slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and rum. Medium to full body with flavors of roast malt, oaky rum and mild hops. The finish is sweet with a rum and molasses aftertaste. Decent overall.

Taste is sweet with a little bitterness in the finish. Flavors of licorice, wet dog, rum. Oily mouthfeel, full body. Smells better than it tastes, but this is not bad.
