Aged in Puerto Rican rum barrels, and brewed with Sweet Barbados and Blackstrap molasses, palm sugar, and Calypso hops, Kill Devil’s flavor and name were inspired by the ingredients used by Caribbean distillers.”

2013.05.17 - Widmer Brothers Kill Devil Ale ’13 - 22oz bottle in pint glass. 2013 Vintage. Aroma: sweetness, almost honey. Appearance: Pours around 12 on SRM scale. Around Newcastle Brown Ale in color. Not much carbonation but a token slick/cap lingers. Taste: Part way between a brown ale and a strong ale, basically. Front end is kind of brown sugar-y, and fades to back end that is a more generic sweetness. Almost honey-like, but presumably the sugar noted in ingredients. Palate/Mouthfeel: Fairly light, a mild creaminess. Traces of alcohol, warmth on back end. Aroma 8/10, Appearance 4/5, Taste 8/10, Palate 4/5, Overall 15/20

Sampled on 11/3/2012. This American Strong Ale pours a dark brown color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, with decent lacing and nice retention. The aroma is caramel, molasses, brown sugar, rum and wood. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, brown sugar and molasses. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Nice wood and rum flavors throughout. Great sipping beer. The rum flavor is especially nice at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This is different than most of the Amer Strong Ales. Sweet brown sugars and cotton candy with alcohol in the nose, however it is difficult to detect. The flavors are subdued, nothing jumps out. I’m getting molasses with alcohol and some rum in the background. Its not too sweet, the alcohol balances that. Not catching much in the hop flavors. Nice palate. Its a little expensive. wouldn’t buy again, but i did enjoy it.

Well, still waiting for one of these boxed wider beers that I’d pay the high price for again. This isn’t it. Some obvious rum flavors from the beginning with a hint of coffee as well, yet it just isn’t anything amazing.

Poured from the bottle into a taster glass. Medium/dark brown in color, very minimal head. Very sweet taste, medium body, not overly carbonated. More flavorful than a typical brown ale and very smooth, probably from the rum barrel aging. Enjoyable, I would drink it again.

5 Oct 2012, bottle. light ruby, clear, no bubbles. nose is sweet, ovaltine and raisins. med body and mildly fizzy. sweet, malty, faintly smoky, caramel, vanilla. lots of flavors and it is nice but i’m a bit disappointed. this could have been a serious, big beer, instead, it is just nice.
