People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

Crisp clear golden and lightly copper tinted body with a thin, one centimetre tall white head. Aroma of grassy, appley, peary and distinctly white grape smelling notes with a nice and pungent sweet and slightly sour kick. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy, airy and pear flavoured hops noticeable up front with the distinctive white grape flavour soon afterwards showing a good bright finish. Aftertaste is very pleasant with nice fruit flavours, a good amount of hops and that strong white grape/apple cider flavour that shows well. Overall, a nice IPA that has a bright and flavourful palate and some great tastes throughout - definitely one to sample if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 24-June-2012 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 10-August-2012.

Sampled on tap. A nicely made ipa with a deep orange hue. A quality brew with nice flavoring.

12oz. btl. Pours slightly hazy, fizzy and somewhat frothy. Aroma is fruity orange, grapefruit and hops dominate the nostrils. Taste is live and follow through is strong. Palate is blasting...just as live as the taste. Very refreshing brew...alcohol content is a little low for my taste in IPA’s, but a very formitable take on the IPA style.

I have always liked Widmer because they make a great hefe. I think this beer is very interesting with the grapefruit peel factor. The apperance is weird because they have little flakes floating in it. The color is lighter than I expected. The smell is also a little off. Just not a great smelling ipa. The taste is pretty good. You can taste the grapefruit in it. It makes the bitter taste spike like a fresh grapefruit would. The palate is fizzy and light. Overall, this beer is decent and I would buy one at a bar fo sho.

Bottled. Pours near clear pale gold with a short head. Minimal retention and decent lace. Soft sweet aroma of oranges and light spice. Medium bitter, light sweet flavor. Medium-light body, thin-oily texture, and a grapefruity bitter-dry finish. Better than average IPA.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2012 So it is warmer out today then the last time I rated this beer. Still enjoy it and will buy it again. Poured into a glass slighty cloudy, orange-yellow. First smell is grapefruit, pine and citrus. Tasting hops and grapefruit with some grassy notes and spiec. Very refreshing. Still loving it.

Pours a slightly cloudy orange yellow with a nice fizzy head. Very soft nose of floral, pine and citrus. Gorgeous hops and bitter citrus flavor notes with grapefruit in the beginning followed by a muted toasty malt profile. Overall it’s fairly tasty. Compared to the more assertive West Coast IPAs, this is very soft and gentle. I like it, a solid effort...

Bottle. Pours a light hazy golden with a thin layer of white foam. Nose shows some grapefruit, fresh grass, light prickly sweetness. Flavor Is similar, a tad boozy and disjointed, but much better overall than the others I have had in this series so far.

single from HEB, opted out of the sixer for grapefruit medicine reasons .. . deep gold .. low foam, light lacing .. . nice solid grapefruit bitterness .. . session-rific feel to it, i like this but the finish is quite weak but my mom really liked it .. . . Your meatloaf will be ready in eight seconds.

A great tasting beer. Pale amber coloured. My only real criticism is that the carbonation doesn’t feel quite right.
