COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

Pours a light amber with a thin head. Aromas of citrus, pine and yeast. Taste has some grassy notes with the grapefruit coming through afterwards, but not as much as I was expecting. Some caramel malts thrown in but nothing really stands out, not even the grapefruit. Ok but was expecting a bit more.

Medium gold with a moderate haze - aroma of moderately honey-sweet maltiness, tropical and citrus fruits, lightly citric and piney hops - moderate carbonation in the mouth - flavor is quite dry, with crisp, crackery malts from the front end to the middle - middle brings strong hop bitterness compounded by the addition of grapefruit - thankfully, at least at this stage, it isn’t overpowering because a light sweetness develops to balance - however, as the finish approaches, the beer dries out again, and the bitterness and strng grapefruit becomes too much as it lingers on the palate for far too long - it’s a decent IPA, but the addition of grapefruit peel proves to be overkill, adding too much undo bitterness - the other qualities redeem it a bit.

In a keg in my house - Orange hue with a white foamy head. Very citrus aroma to be expected with the grapefruit peels in the mix. Drinks very smooth with a nice IPA flavor. I’ll be sad when this keg runs out. I may need to get another one.

Bottle. Similar to the rotator in the series, Well made IPA but nothing distinguished from any other, Maybe I just can’t tell the difference between the different variety of hops

Appearance: Pours a clear amber gold with an off white pinestripe.

Aroma: Grapefruit oil, tropical fruit and light sweetness.

Taste: Pungent earthy hops, pale malt, grapefruit bitterness. Finishes earthy bitter and dry.

Mouthfeel: Astringent medium bodied with rough carbonation.

Overall: It’s hard to tell where the hops end and the grapefruit peel begins with this beer. It’s well crafted (the malt base is solid), but a bit too astringent for me to want to have a second one.

Pale gold with a thin white head. Aroma is very grapefruity, and it has an undertone of lemongrass to it as well. Taste is less passionate than expected. Dry, with some orangey hop notes, but overall cleaner and more drinkable than flavorful. $2/12oz

Draft at South Park Tavern. Really a mild IPA overall. I really didn’t get anything from the grapefruit peels until the finish with some pithy bitterness. Fine.

12oz bottled May 9, 2012. Served at around 40-45F.

Pours mostly clear golden amber with a two finger white head that leaves some lacing and recedes to a small foamy cap.

Aroma starts dank, herbal and a bit musty, then I can pick up a little of the the grapefruit peel, floral hops, some bready malt. Good to very good strength.

Flavor is grapefruit, orange, citrus, some caramel and bready malt in the middle with a decent bit of sweetness, moderate bitterness on the finish with a touch of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, oily, yet a bit creamy, moderate carbonation.

Nice easy-drinking IPA. Good flavor, aroma is a bit odd with the musty notes, though.

Bottle. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate citrus hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate bittersweet flavor with a moderate bittersweet finish of medium duration. Very good brew.

Lots of citrus grapeqfruit in the aroma. Very citrusy and a bit dry at the same time. Sticks on the tongue a tad too long but at the least the nose lasts.
