People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

Mouth watering juicey red grapefruit nose with a little pine in the background. Grapefruit and more grapefruit, with a medium bitter finish. My new breakfast drink. Lacks some of the malt sweetness for balance. Very refreshing and fun to drink.

On draught at the Tilted Kilt in Myrtle Beach. Pours a deep golden/off-orange into the glass, with a wispy foamed head that reduces to soapy lace. A lot of peel and zest and light pine to the nose. Flavors follow the profile, a little thin on the malt backbone with bitters mingling with lots of peel, rind and zest toward a crisp bitter finish. Works ok for the summer heat, but not a heavy IPA. It certainly doesn't have to be, but just a bit seltzery for my liking. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a clear gold with a medium white head...nice retention and lacing. Aroma is lightly floral...citrusy...orange. flavor has orange and grapefruit with mild pine in the end. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with a dry citrusy/lt pine finish.

12oz bottle, bottled 5/9/12. IPA brewed with grapefruit peels? My interest is piqued. Good thin off-white head, clear amber color, bubbles on the side of the glass. Bit of lace. Nice lighter crisp carbonation, dry finish. Nice straw and tropical hop flavor. Less grapefruit than I was expecting, though - it’s a lot more subdued than the much hoppier ales that make me think "grapefruit". Solid crisp malt base. Light bitter flavor. Drinkable and decent, but unimpressive and a bit weak on the flavor. Interesting brew, though.

Great smooth IPA. Not overly heavy and can enjoy on a hit summer afternoon. Grapefruit flavor comes through and aroma is pleasing. My local beer store can't keep it in stock ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Filtered orange-tan. Massive frothy off-white head. aggressively rising CO2 bubbles. The Rotator series has been fun and this is another cool beer. Not hyper grapefruit forward...I have had a few (St. Peters, Blue Heron) that were really big with the grapefruit. This is more centered in IPA. I’m not really a fan of the filtering with this one, it seems to thin it out too much, I guess they wanted to get the grapefruit taste clear for the consumer...which it still isn’t. Bonus points for not putting this out in a six dollar bomber. A quality beer, just a little streamlined, a la Sam Adams.

Draft at Sugarmoms. Clear light copper with a fizzy foamy head. Juicy but dry. Big grapefruit pith and zest. Burned sugar cane. Bit peppery. Black tea. Lots of dry citrus notes. Well balanced but not overly complex.

12 oz bottle. Clear deep golden with a foamy off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, toasty British malt and honey. Flavor is rich toasty malt with a medium hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation and a clean, bitter finish. Great beer, the grapefruit peel comes across almost as Citra hops.

draft. grapefruit. more grapefruit. I appreciate the citrus grapefruit aroma and flavor but the bitterness isn’t there. that being said, it’s a good refreshing beer that would serve well on a hot summer day.

12oz bottle poured into a large Duvel tulip glass. Pours a clear golden hued color with a quarter finger head with no lacing. Aroma is grapefruit and pine. The taste was less muted than what I was expecting. I did get the grapefruit but no real hop flavor to speak of. Mouthfeel is dry and clean at the finish. Despite not being a hop bomb it’s still a good choice for summer.
