People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

You know, the grapefruit isn’t such a bad idea. It makes a dry beer a little more juicy, and it makes a spicy beer like this one a little more lively on the other end of the spectrum. Bright and well-hopped. The malts are a bit mushy and plain. Damp palate.

(12oz bottle) Pours a clear golden body with a spare fizzy white head. Aroma of fresh cut grass, pine resin, stone fruit, and grapefruit peel. Flavor of pine, grass, grapefruit, herbaceous, pineapple, caramel, and light bread with a dry, bitter finish.

Bottle - Bottled Jun 2012; Drank Sep 2012 - Orangey Gold in colour. Very Fruity; grapefruit citrus (and lots of it), hints of tropical fruit, slight spice undertone. Hoppy; piney resiny hops. Malty; biscuity malts, caramel. Bittersweet citrus fruity throughout; ending rather dry. Not aggressively hopped or too assertively citric. Decent.

Nice yellow ale with a loose white foam that falls in a minute or two. Smells like grapefruit with some resin, but mostly grapefruit. Really a nice nose to me with the amount of fruit here. Flavor is bitter and, again, carries a profound amount of bittersweet grapefruit meat flavor. There are some bitter, grassy tones, but mostly the grapefruit is there with a hint of bitterness underneath and a slightly alcoholic temperature. Medium bodied with moderately hi carb and a forgetable finish. Nice beer, had two pints. Serving type: on-tap 07-10-2012

Orange with a white head. The aroma is full of pine and grapefruit. The flavor is more complex. I get some strong resinous pine and grass notes, as well as some toffee and a low amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle from Binny’s. Pours light golden orange with white head. Aromas of pale malt, grapefruit, and other citrus hops. Flavors of faded hops, grapefruit, and some pale malts. Think this may have been an older bottle as it was lacking in the hop flavor department.

12 oz bottle with May 2012 date. Pours hazy orange with a long lasting, foamy, white head and lively carbonation. Body is medium and crisp. Biscuit malt, earthy hops and some fruity and citrusy notes. Finish is long and slightly grapefruity. Quite mellow and interesting brew after aging.

This beer is not for everyone. At the first taste your taste buds are surprised by the distinctive grapefruit undertones. Your first impression is "Is this beer good?" You wait take another sip and think "Yes, this is good" Wait a day and drink another Shaddock you will be amazed by the complexity of the beer and the hint of citrus after taste or you don’t really care for grapefruit and a more bitter tone and feel it is just a good beer. For me it is a great beer! Love it! I tip my beer keg to the Widmer Brothers Brewing staff. Just wish it wasn’t on the Rotator Rotation and a beer you could get any time.

Made with grapefruit peel, it has light grapefruit in the nose with a sweet grainy malt is present. Seems rather spicy and earthy as well. The hop bitterness balances well with the lightly sweet caramel and biscuity malt. Pine, grass, and earthy hops are up front, and yet finish with a nice citrus and spicy punch. A very tasty offering.
