UPDATED: DEC 7, 2012 Had on draft at Moriarty?s as Widmer Bros "Red Hook" (two brewers that merged.) Took some research to figure out it was this one, though there is a chance it is the Widmer?s Spiced IPA. Clear orange brown pour. Foamy white head that lasts and lasts. Combo of a black pepper spice mix and a big piney hop bite balanced with some caramel malt flavors. Stings a bit on the tongue, but that?s not a bad thing. Despite the lightly chewy malt notes this is a big IPA.

This was a very interesting IPA, I think I like citra hops. Light yellow-orange with lacing. Smells kind of dank, good smell. The flavor is nice citrus, pine, dank. This may be widmer brothers best beer as far as I’m concerned and at 8.50 per sixer it’s probably the best hoppy beer for the money around here.

pours a clear yellow-orange with a medium size white head.
smell is floral, hops, and citrus.
taste is smooth, hops, few malts, lemon, and pine. ends bitter.

Medium gold, clear, persistent white head. Aroma of grassy, herbal hops with tangerine/citrus, underlying neutral grainy malt. Flavor: grainy malt with light caramel note, pronounced citrusy hop flavor with some grassy/vegetal notes, lingering resiny bitterness.

Taken from old notes. Tropical fruits and pepper on the nose. Nice palate of bitter and sweet. Finishes good.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a typically carbonated hazy yellow colored body. The aroma was malty. The semi-flat smooth mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of hops. Not one that I would likely buy again.

Of the two widely available Widmer IPAs, I preferred this a little to the O’Ryely IPA even though that one is slightly higher rated overall (found it just a tad too sweet and rye-forward to be a great sipper). Some decent citrus sweetness here. Solid hops. Doesn’t stand up to the greats, but a good IPA for the price and availability.

Slightly cloudy copper coloured body with an orange glow and a thin, off-white head, about a centimetre thick. Aroma of very resiny, citrus, grapefruity and herbal hop notes with a bunch of alcohol and some pungent sweetness noticeable as well. Medium-bodied; Pungent hoppy note with citrus, pine and grapefruit at first, but the body doesn’t last long and more of a bittering flavour is left with no harsh and deep malts. Aftertaste is more bitter and herbal than anything else, with less malt than most IPAs and no real sweetness. More of a one-dimensional hop hit, which is nice, but not very well rounded. Overall, a decent beer that isn’t bad at all, but not showing the malt backbone and full complexity that make good IPAs stellar, but nice for hopheads that don’t care about the body as much. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Giant Food in Arlington (Bailey’s Crossroads), Virginia on 08-February-2012 for US$9.99/6pack, sampled at home in Washington on 27-April-2012.
