3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Just this side of black color, tried to coax some head out of the beer but it wasnít cooperating. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, malts, taste is similar with plums, brown sugar, nuts, grape soda. Strange combination of thick mouthfeel and watery finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from a trade. Nose is deep dark chocolate to light roast and coffee. Pitch black with a small off white head. Taste is seemingly balanced between sugary sweetness and a dark roasted bitterness. Moderare to high carbonation. Tingles the lips. Easy drinking and palatable. A light alcohol noted in the late finush after a few sips. Nice

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
22 oz bottle. Aroma: malty, roasty, and creamy, with hints of chocolate, marshmallow, and leather. Taste/Palate: sweet, creamy, and thick; finish has a very subtle astringency. Holy shit, itís back! This beer was my all-time favorite for many years, until they stopped making it several years ago. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw it on the shelf at New Seasons. And, guess what...it is still my favorite beer! Now if only Widmer could figure out what they are doing wrong with the rest of their beers...

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
I remember this as just an average beer, with nothing really noteworthy, other than like so many Widmer beers, itís just okay.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Has a bit of winter warmer in it mixed with the stout, pretty malty, a good winter beer all around.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
01-Feb-11 (12-oz bottle: $7.49/six-pack at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) 2007-8 Release. I do like this beer fresh, but I think it really hits its stride with 2-3 years of cellaring. The moderately sweet, dark, malty flavors have rounded out, offering cola, molasses, licorice, caramelized brown sugar, dark toast, coffee, chocolate milk, earth, and prunes, finishing with a touch of campfire. Even though this is a milk stout and itís moderately sweet, it doesnít taste sugary. Enticing aromas of dark toast, cola, shitake mushrooms, fallen trees, dark chocolate, prunes, and peat bolster the impressively complex flavors. Medium-full bodied and gently carbonated on the palate, and though the beer is sweet, thereís enough roast and even a touch of acidity to keep the beer balanced on the palate, so itís not cloying. Very dark brown in color, black and opaque except at the edges, but the dark beige head pours to only a quarter inch and settles to a thin ring, leaving only a few spots of lace on the glass. Absolutely delicious! Hands down, the best 6-pack beer Widmer makes.
05-Sep-09 (12-oz bottle) 2004 Release. Been in the fridge since the day I got it, so this is an unintended experiment on if this beerís life can last five years. Frankly, itís a lot better than expected. Prominent flavors of sweet cola and molasses set the tone, with light roast in the background, but the beer doesnít taste especially malty. The taste is rather sweet, but on the sugary side, and there is a bit of metallic flavor in the finish. Body is medium and carbonation is light. Cola, brown sugar, dark fruits, bread and a touch of metallic in the nose. Very dark brown in color with seemingly good clarity, and the rapidly dissipating, light-brown head pours to a quarter inch. Almost certainly better when fresh because the metallic flavor probably isnít going to be there, but sugary sweetness is what it is, so probably not substantially better. Nevertheless, this isnít bad for a beer that was meant to be consumed five years ago. (6, 3, 6, 3, 12 = 3.0)
