A pinch of black malt and a splash of roasted barley break this IPA apart from tradition, Cascadian Dark. Join the shady revolution.

12 oz bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours near black, with ruby hints. Light tan head, leaves little lacing. Aroma is primarily roasted malt, some hop bitterness as well. Taste is similar. Pretty good CDA.

Bottle @ home. Black appearance with a tan head. Pretty roasty, but the piney, lightly dank hops are forefront in the nose. Well carbonated. Flavors of chocolate, toffee, light espresso, piney, dank hops with a piney, chocolate aftertaste. Pretty good.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, malt, light pine, slight citrus, caramel, light resin, and some roasting. Poured dark brown/deep ruby in color with a small, tan head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Clear. Sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor is medium sweet and medium bitter. Tastes of malt, hops, pine, resin, and slight caramel. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, hop, pine finish.

Pitch brown with a slowly fading brown topper with curtain lacing. Aroma of deep roasted malts, chocolate, piney and resinous hops. Taste is solid with a good mix of dark malts and hops. Chocolate, floral and resinous hops, a touch of biscuit and mild coffee. Bitterness is spot on and there’s some mild warming to boot. Mouth feel is on the full side and there’s a touch of acidity.

Appearance: deep and burnt with mahogany glints when held up to light. Coffee ice cream foam leaves clumps of lace, a thick collar, and a blotchy head. Swirls decadently thick.
Nose: roasted and burnt, hoppy and toasty, charred whole hop cones. Burnt pie crust. Pine cones and general scorched forest esters. Hint of grapefruit pith – pink than white. Black patent malt mingles with charcoal and wispy embers. Dry, crisp, and inviting.
Palate: clean and toasty up front with dry brittle European chocolates in the back and finish. Pine and pith along sides and underneath. Medium weight and mouthfeel. Subtle pink grapefruit lingers atop tongue and tingles the lips. Pine cones and burnt evergreen. Starts to grow a smoky sweet underbelly. Interestingly simple but with matching complexity. Chocolate cookie sticks – like the kind you dip in your dry dark roasty coffee.
Final Thoughts: I wasn’t expecting much because, well, Widmer doesn’t usually inspire me to expect much. I was pleasantly surprised then to find their Pitch Black IPA to be quite tasty. No complaints here; just a good beer I’d be happy to drink again.

I dig Widmer but if you elect to entitle your beer Pitch Black IPA maybe it should be pitch black. Deep burgundy brown-black. Thin, off white head. Really well executed, lighter side of full bodied beer. Oily and resinous, has a solid enough hop bill to be a good representation of the style. Well balanced by some nice chocolate tones. Fresh. bold, drinkable. Great beer.

Not quite "pitch black," but dark, near-opaque, a little brownish red at the edges when held to light. Yields about a 1/2 inch cream head that leaves a nice sticky lace on the glass. floral, herbs, earthy, slight alcohol, ginger?? Well balanced hops slight citrus. Medium Carbonation despite being an IPA slight coffee as well.. A little weird but still pretty tasty.

12oz bottle–pours a tight tan head and black color. Aroma is sweet resin, roasty. Taste is sweet resin hops, roasty dark malt. Easy.

Bottle, under the alternate label. It is pitch black alright. The beer presents itself as a porter, both in color and initial aroma. But at the first quaff, the hoppiness is readily apparent. Quite drinkable and refreshing. (#4161, 7/10/11)

Bottle to pint glass. Pouts a (bitch) black, but really it has a little transparency. Dark brown, virtually no head, but laces well. Has some great hop bite flavors, and a roasted malt aftertaste. Pretty darn nice.
