This is a full-strength beer containing 5.4% by vol. alcohol, which is spicy and not too strongly hopped. Stammbräu harks back to the optimistic mood of the early days, still prevailing here, and is advertised with period illustrations from shortly after the turn of the century. Stammbräu is only available in the traditional cliplock bottles, which have been re-introduced. Particularly in the Vienna area,

Bottle 0.5L. Moderate hoppy aroma (herbal) with light malty notes (cookies); light alcohol note and maybe toffee in the finish. Clear yellow body with small, fizzy, white head; mostly diminishing with virtually no lacing. Flavour is light-to-moderate sweet and light bitter at the beginning, then the sweet note disappears leaving a moderate bitter note; average-to-long finsh. Light-to-medium body with a watery texture; average carbonation; light alcoholic note in the finish.

Bottled, in Vienna. Full flavour. Starts out as soft and malty sweet, but this is followed by a fine hoppy bitterness. Worth seeking out if you are in Austria.

Pours a clear yellow with no head. Very malty with some nutty aromas. Slightly metallic. Medium CO2 level. Medium to full bodied. Long dry, dusty finish. Not my favourite style.

(Bottled) Clear golden color with a smallish, mostly fading head. Grassy German-pils-hoppy aroma with honeyish maltiness. Some sweetish maltiness with smooth, grassy hops. Some toffee in the finish. Light to medium-bodied, slightly sticky palate with balanced, a bit foamy carbonation. A quite nice and refreshing, honey-sweetish and not very hoppy pilsener.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2007 Bottled. Much creamy and supporter head, optimal persistence. Yellow clearly color enough fizzy. Warm and unbalanced hoppy and alcohol scent. Medium crisp, excessive hoppy and bitter taste; notes of grass and worthless cereals on the end. Failed.

Served in the bottle with the stopper as shown in the picture. Drank this at the HI hostel (an HI hostel with a bar!!!), Salzburg, Austria. Somewhat grainy tasting, not overly special.

Bottle. Light golden in colour with a ever fading white head. Aroma of floral hops and cookie malts. Flavour was malty (caramel and light cookie dough), floral. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finish is long and bitter. Thanks for sharing this one with me Adam.
