Traditional Southern Irish ale with a fine maltiness balanced by a subtle hop character from New Zealand grown Hallertau hops. Brewed with Crystal malt, chocolate malt and a touch of roast malt to give a rich deep copper hue.

Light amber color, lots of caramel and dried strawberries. OK, but not so exciting.

Tasted 5/3/2014. Draught at "Wig & Pen", Canberra. Poured a translucent coppery amber with one-finger of white froth for a head that diminished quickly to a collar. Laced OK. Carbonation virtually nil with rare small bubble trails. Aroma of sweet malt and sweet fruity hops (possibly passionfruit). Taste of sweet fruits over-riding anything else; possibly a very faint hops bitterness; the nice aroma does not transfer to the taste. Light body. Smooth, light with a sweet finish. Very nice!

Old notes 11/2/09 Draught at Brewery, Canberra Pours a dark bronze body. Holds a small tan head. Decidedly roasty nose; charred meatiness, dark chocolate with plenty of burnt toffee and nuts. Subtle hint of floral hop as it warms. Medium-to-full body, has a bit of chewiness to it, carbonation perhaps a tad high. Nice burnt toffee character on the body, leading onto more roasty notes of weak coffee and charred toast. Moderate bitterness with some faint spicy hop character to finish. Not a bad beer.

Tap. Very good. Aromas of caramel, toffee, and roast. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Amber, with a frothy head.

On tap at the brewpub. Didn’t seem like an Irish Red Ale when I tried it, actually seemed more of a Barley Wine that hadn’t been cellared. Got a bit of heat from the alcohol that doesnt seem to be there. Light floral aroma, but more toffee malt than anything in the taste.

Tried on tap at Wig and Pen back in May. Darker red in colour than I was expecting. Roasty malt aroma with the same in the taste, lightly burnt caramel. After having three of beers that were hopped right up this was a change up and probably should have been tried before the others.

Draught at Wig & Pen, Canberra. Pours dark ruby with a creamy beige head. The aroma is roasted malt and dark fruit. The flavour is roasted malt, nuts and dark fruit. Smooth mouthfeel with a good lingering bitterness in the finish. Not bad.

Disappearing head. More black then red. Vegemite tastes at the back end. Not the best at the Wig and Pen.

Draught at the brewhouse. Arrived a dark coppery black with ruby highlights and a creamy white head which was mostly diminishing. Aroma full of toffee and candy sugar up front, some biscuity notes and malty caramel in the back. Taste was more caramel and toffee, sweet malts and mild golden syrup. Light to medium bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel, soft carbonation and a short finish.

21 Mar 2006 - Toffee malt and steely aroma. Clear red-brown, low head and lacing. Light malt and hop flavour. Clean light bitter finish and malt lingering aftertaste.
