A complex mix of fruity sweet & sour with bite combined in a smooth brew that really delivers a patriotic blend.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500ml bottle BB 10/9/2016
Malt aroma but not much else.
Poured a hazy light brown with decent head.
Good bitterness that gives way to a smoky burnt Manuka finish.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I ended up liking this more than I should. It’s really a palate shocker. Pine spruce, short delivery, but sweet of honey and a finish of smoked something or other. Great persistent head and a lacing to die for. But! it’s a beer that you’d tire of in a hurry it’s just too sweet to the detriment of anything else that is in this, and that a shame. As a Spice beer this is pretty good. As a beer that you get for sailing half way around the world....... no so much

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle courtesey of Kate P. A deep chestnut coloured ale with a cream coloured head. Lots of resinours pine aromas and flavours. There’s some caramel in there too. Has an interesting aftertaste that isn’t great. Not bad overall.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours amber with creamy off white head. Smells like the outdoors. Tastes quite sweet, with a slight spiciness, not very bitter though. Bit of a thin palate, quite dry. I feel that it would go well with salted pork and hard tack, the way Capt. Cook’s men had it.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Picked up 500 ml bottle from New World in Christchurch. Pours slightly cloudy amber colour with small creamy head that hangs around. When I first looked at it I thought damn. The aroma was very much like a cider. The initial taste was complex. It was too cold. It was like a journey drinking this. Each sip had something to offer. Overall a nice beer. Palate was light so nothing really lingered. Some of the notes were slight acidic cider in the beginning, the sweet malt, smokey honey, caramel, toffee, ginger and spices as it warmed.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Really enjoyed this beer as something new and different. It was a subtle beer with some very nice flavours of rumu and manuka but nothing to over the top.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Amber and hazy. Aroma is sprucey and molassesy aroma. Sweet and molasses, with spruce character, soft body and a sweet finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Barry’s Bay Cheese Co., Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, Christchurch
Ruby brown with fluffy white head. Spicy nutmeg and honey notes with spicy dry malts. White pepper, light carbonation and sweet honey caramel finish. More sprue appears on warming. May not be for everyone but I enjoyed it, reminds me of Nollaig by Williams bros.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Deep amber under a beige head with evident carbonation. The aroma of manuka wafts to the nostrils before nosing. Lovely, peppery, honey spiciness. You could attempt to replicate this aroma by raiding the spice cupboard in the kitchen, but the smell of rimu chips would be difficult to do. A little sweet initially and very full mouthfeel. Those same spruce flavours dominate and are quite lovely. The body is a wee bit thin. I feel that this beer needs to bit full and chewy, but otherwise a lovely drop.
