An excellent brew that is a local (antipodean) benchmark. Probably something Iíll be re-rating (on the upside) in the future.

Dark chocolate aroma on opening, great look pour with a lovely head, but neither of them made it past a few moments, There is a burst of alcohol that underlies this, and that pushes it to the sour side of balanced against the sweetness. But it is lovely with hints of fruits, toasted malts, and is thoroughly nice drop. cheers.

Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. Aroma has roast, coffee, liquorice. Black coloured beer with a thin off-white head. The taste is bitter, bit sweet, has caramel tones, some chocolate, liquorice, light coffee tones there. Bit yeasty as well. Wasnít too impressed.

it isnít awfully complex, pretty much just roasted malts and rich alcohol (which tends to give off dark fruit and wine flavours), but it is still rather pleasant to drink and it has a beautifully smooth palate. so, pretty good.

Iím drinking this while cooking with Mediterranean spices, so I could be off here, but not for the first time Iím getting hints of cardamom sitting just on top of the licorice, which really works (Saudis drink coffee with cardamom, yum). Extra mark for being excellent value for money. A warming beer for a winter evening.

A spectacular beer with smooth chocolate malt flavours in a strong beer that really knows what it's all about. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown, aroma is light fudge, choc, and a bit of fruitiness. Med impy, slight roast, fudgey but also fairly yeasty. Quite light for the style, maybe think of it as "extra stout" and youíll be happy.

Bottle in NZ. Pours black with a small tan head which quickly disappears. Nose shows light charcoal, heavy mocha tones, very roasty, and a hint of molasses. Taste is rich, roasted coffee, light ash yet balanced. Quite a bit of toasted malts with a creamy, almost cocoa powder feel to it. Quite dry. Solid stuff
