The Wigram Brewing Company wishes to advise that our Red Sparkling Ale Full Strength Beer has been crafted from Historical Hops which were discovered still growing on the banks of the Hokitika River. The original hops were grown by a pioneer Hokitika brewer, Mr William CJ Kortegast. His Crown Brewery was one of the very first West Coast Breweries. Remnants of these Kortegast hops have been incorporated into our Sparkling Red Ale, which is red in colour with low to medium bitterness and the aromatic flavour of the Hokitika hops on the finish. WJC Kortegast died in 1897 and the source of his hop supply was lost, although the memory of his famous brews lingered on. This Sparkling Ale is dedicated to WJC Kortegast and the pioneer brewers of Hokitika.

Bottle. I have a cold right now, so my palate may be a little off. This poured a clear reddish amber with a nice vanilla-tinted foamy head that left some early lace. Nice aroma of toffee and toast, but again, my sniffer isn’t 100% at the moment. Palate is chiefly toasty malt with a nice candied orange note, and a surprising amount of bitter hosp balances out the finish. Very nice, and one I would like to try again once I get rid of this cold!

pleasantly earthy/musty aroma. Lightish body with a touch of caramel. Slighly roasted, almost smoky finish, with a nicely balanced finish.

Tried on tap at Cookies. Tawny, clear body with short lasting head. Slight grapefruit in the taste with supporting malt - caramel, and a light body.

500ml Clear amber bronze, good head. An aroma with some (surprising) alcohol warmth touched with pine/forest hop about it. Tastes darker than it looks - a touch chocolate, earthy malts with a raw lingering hop finish. Reminds me of when I used to drink my dads beer what it tasted like.

Pours a clear deep red/oranage, white partly diminishing head. Chocolaty malt nose. Tastes quite chocolatey for a sparkling ale, sweet initially ending in a slight bitterness.

Bottle, one of the best looking beers that I have poured for a while. A brilliantly clear red amber with a large rocky off white head, and just a touch of that sparkling in the tall glass. A full malty aroma, slightly biscuity, plenty of caramal, but maybe a bit of cardboard. A touch of vegetable on the palate, low bitterness with an earthy malty flavour. Looks great, but didn’t quite live up the viewing. Though this is not a style I typically enjoy.
