Epic by name, epic by nature, this Farmhouse Ale is a transcontinental fusion of Belgiumís eclectic beer culture and the feisty hops of North America brought to life with the aid of West Country artisanal brewing wizardry and judicious use of the US-grown Sorachi Ace hop. On the nose, the hops deliver a big splash of tropical fruit, followed by ripples of well-seasoned spiciness spreading outwards. In the mouth a tangy, bittersweet fruitiness holds sway, while tangerine oranges tap dance their way across the tongue in the finish.

Bottle at home. Pours a clear orange with a big, fluffy pillowy head. Bright tropical fruits on the nose, something waxy, some booze and a definite hint of spicy, soapy Sorachi funk. Surprisingly bitter, really quite tangy. Orange pith, white pepper. Just a hint of soft malt, the farmhouse thing doesnít really appear until it opens up but thatís ok. Waxy lemon rind bitterness on the finish. Soft, creamy carbonation, really spot-on actually. Really quite unique - I wasnít convinced to begin with, but itís a good íun!

Nice saison, but maybe a bit strong and not so well balanced.

small bottle sample at a bar, cloudy orange pour with a small white head on top, floral hop, crisp, orange, citrus, grapes, yeast, with some spices in the back, lotís of peach and mango forward. would love to try this on a hot summer day instead of a warm bar during winter

Actually, this was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a nice looking hazy golden orange color with a fairly foamy to bubbly and clingy looking head. Decent clingy bubbly lacing surrounds the glass. The smell starts off with a woody acceptable vinous leaning to a fresh grape. As it warms, thereís a slight sour grape to slight tart cherry. The taste evenly disperses itself along my tongue to the tart to sour to woody cherry and citric fruitiness. Thereís a light woody aftertaste that leads to a dry finish. On the palate, this one sits about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat sharp but not overbearing. Overall, for a saison, this one really comes across as pretty woody in the flavoring. To me, this is just okay, unsure if I really would come back to again.

An enticing, entertaining, and ultimately engaging brew that defines itís own style (and it is a fine one at that).

Mine was labeled Somerset rather than Epic saison. Anyway, itís a solid British-American-Belgian wild ale. Not really a saison; hoppier than anything youíd find in Belgium, plus the yeast isnít a saison yeast, itís more of a dry, barnyard-type geuze yeast. Iím getting the citrus orange/tangerine flavor, but it seems weird because Iíve never had these hops used with this type of yeast before. I love the innovation, but in terms of execution it is only a partial success.
