COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Epic by name, epic by nature, this Farmhouse Ale is a transcontinental fusion of Belgiumís eclectic beer culture and the feisty hops of North America brought to life with the aid of West Country artisanal brewing wizardry and judicious use of the US-grown Sorachi Ace hop. On the nose, the hops deliver a big splash of tropical fruit, followed by ripples of well-seasoned spiciness spreading outwards. In the mouth a tangy, bittersweet fruitiness holds sway, while tangerine oranges tap dance their way across the tongue in the finish.

Bottle at home. Pours a clear orange with a big, fluffy pillowy head. Bright tropical fruits on the nose, something waxy, some booze and a definite hint of spicy, soapy Sorachi funk. Surprisingly bitter, really quite tangy. Orange pith, white pepper. Just a hint of soft malt, the farmhouse thing doesnít really appear until it opens up but thatís ok. Waxy lemon rind bitterness on the finish. Soft, creamy carbonation, really spot-on actually. Really quite unique - I wasnít convinced to begin with, but itís a good íun!

Mine was labeled Somerset rather than Epic saison. Anyway, itís a solid British-American-Belgian wild ale. Not really a saison; hoppier than anything youíd find in Belgium, plus the yeast isnít a saison yeast, itís more of a dry, barnyard-type geuze yeast. Iím getting the citrus orange/tangerine flavor, but it seems weird because Iíve never had these hops used with this type of yeast before. I love the innovation, but in terms of execution it is only a partial success.

Bottle from Plonk (March 2014). Hazy golden/orange, large frothy, soapy head, green grapes, lemon, lychee, grainy, earthy hops, medium bitterness, medium sweetness, slightly dusty/dry mouthfeel, quite nice.

330ml bottle. Hazy orange beer with a big fluffy transient white head that laces nicely. Nose has grains, citrusy fruits (oranges mainly) and mild barnyard earthy grassy yeasty notes. Flavours are satisfyingly bittersweet with a light peppery dry hop finish. Palate is less full bodied than many other saisons but this makes for more sessionability which is ok in my book. Another winner from this very commendable brewery.

Bottle. Fruity aroma of white grape and pineapple and apple. Hazy, effervescent pale orange under a lasting, white cover. Woody dry flavour with vinous white grape, cranberry, and pear notes. Light body, high carbonation, crisp and refreshing.

Lemon peel hop aroma with pepper spices in the background. Appearance is yellow with a big white head with good retention. Flavor is full of citrus zest notes. Pepper notes are present in the background. The beer is sweet upfront but dry on the end. Mouthfeel has a medium body and a high level of carbonation. Overall, it's a decent beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: (as Somerset Saison) Clear gold with a huge, just-off-white head. Peppery, straw and yeast aroma. Flavour is light and airy, lemon, barnyard...straw/grass. Nice pleasing bitter.
