bottled, special
an aged barley wine, that has spent the last 9 months slowly developing in Marc de Bourgogne casks. We bought the barrels with this beer in mind, as soon as we opened them up the aroma that hit us screamed barley wine at us. It’s a dark, warming style of bar, with a rich, boozy, fruitcake character. The big flavours and warming alcohol make this the perfect winter beer.

Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, big thanks to Leighton for another Wild hook up, 16/01/14. HAzed chestnut brown/dark amber with a thin light beige cover that dissipates to spotting and edgework. Nose is oaky woody light booze lick, dark fruits, sugars, not a whole lot of depth. Taste comprises dark toffee, hint of spice, dark fruit mash, prunes, dates, bitter fruit notes, oaky, light booze. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure with tangy fruit resonance. Ok barley wine, never to be a world beater but the sweetness is well tempered and doesn’t run away and steal the show.

330ml bottle from Kris Wines. Oh my. That sweet brandy aroma really is something else. Had to put off the first sip so I could soak up even more. Tongue numbingly strong, had me dizzy before I’d gotten half way through. The brandy influence permeates the entire beer to create a warming, rich, boozy taste primed for swirling round the glass and sniffing in front of a roaring fire. Marvellous stuff.

Bottle from Independent Spirit, Sat 25th January 2014 consumed at home Wednesday 29th January 2014 Nice nose its got a soft warm, wet woodiness, the barrel ageing had worked well. Pleasant hazy, murky reddy/brown in colour. Soft in the mouth some overipe figs, goes down surprisingly well for its abv, not too sweet, its pretty good. Definately woody throughout but there is a fruity tang albeit very subtle. A7 A3 T8 P4 Ov14 3.6

Bottle 330ml vintage 2013 (AbM)
Deep copper color, small off-white head. Wood, red wine and alcohol in the nose. Medium-bodied. Dry flavor. Alcohol, red wine - red grapes, oak and hints of vanilla in the flavor. Bourgogne is dominant here. Interesting and quite succesfully aged beer.

Bottle provided by the Right Honourable Mr Leighton. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is figgy pudding, candy, dried fruit, cherry and brown sugar. The taste is fruit cake, raisin, earth, candy, brown bread, plum skin, cherry, light tanginess, vinous, figgy pudding, wood and some alcohol warmth. Medium-full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. I really like that deep fruity character. Nice work.

Bottle cheers to Leighton. Pours clear dark brown with a creamy beige head. Nose is spot on to a sticky date pudding - big dark fruit, toffee and doughy bread. Taste is sweet toffee and vanilla with big dark fruits. Very sticky sweet stuff and a little boozy. Taste like dessert. Taste like sticky date pudding and custard. There you have it
