Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Pours an inky black, finger of deep brown head. Aroma is big espresso and coffee grain, chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, prunes and fire damaged buildings (they’ve got ash in them, alright?). Taste is surprising - softer chocolate initially, with the coffee and dark, dried fruit characters coming later, with a bit of bourbon-y vanilla. This would be astounding if bourbon barrel aged well. Medium-full body, long, flavourful, coffee bitter finish. Very good indeed.

16/V/16 - sample @ Leuven Innovation - BB: n/a (2016-586) Thanks to the Belgian RB crew for sharing today’s beers!

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of vanilla, sweet, chocolate, lots of milk chocolate. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet start, caramel, lots of vanilla, bit malty, sugary. Aftertaste: sweet, bit sugary, vanilla, alcohol, pretty bitter.

@ LIBF 2016. Dark brown/black. Light roastiness, coffee, lots of cocoa, milk chocolate and vanilla, too much vanilla. Too sweet

Bottle @ LIBF’16. Shared with the RB Belgian team.

At LIBF. Atypical beer for this brewery in being a classic imperial stout. Thin, off-white, quickly vanishing head, pitch black robe. Lovely and rich aroma of strong vanilla and even vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, hazelnut paste, ’fondant’ chocolate, cappuccino, pear syrup, toffee, dates, coconut. Sweet and rich onset, candied brown sugar sweetness, candied banana and marzipan hints, rounded, thick and oily malt body, chocolatey with a coffeeish roasted bittering touch, some whisky-like warming alcohol. Decadent, opulent and ’moelleux’, with sweetness dominating: this seems closer to an imperial porter than to an imperial stout, but an astonishingly good one at that.

Appearance is jet black, completely opaque, a few tan bubbles in place of any kind of head. Aroma- leather dipped in milk chocolate, lots of vanilla, chocolate fudge cake, oak, forest floor, coffee liqueur, hints of cherry skins and brandy-soaked prunes, roasted malt throughout. Taste- boozy chocolate milkshake, vanilla sweetness, dark cocoa-heavy chocolate, coffee with a shot of alcohol, hazelnut and vanilla, a very long, sticky and bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel is a little thin for the abv. Very nice, if a little rough around the edges.
