3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hopscotch (7288) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - AUG 27, 2003
Lovely, sparkling clear ruby-colored beer. Large, rocky, khaki-colored head. Excellent, thick, cascading lacework.
Interwoven coffee, chocolate and vanilla aromas.
Bold taste. Very well-bittered to balance out the chewy, roasted malt. Strong coffee on the tongue and in the throat. Some pungent hops thrown in the batch as well. I also detect some smoky undertones.
Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and moderate carbonation.
Short, toasted, dry finish. Very satisfying!
There's a lot going on in this brew!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 jayme9874 (756) - Hamburg, New York, USA - JUL 26, 2003
Deep brown/ruby colored. Nice light tan head and moderate lace. Nose of roast, coffee with hints of chocolae. Medium bodies, nice roasty and coffee flavors, some sweet chocolate nuances, minimal hopping. Smooth, tasty porter.
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sturgess (173) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 23, 2003
Not bad...not a great porter, def had better, not a big wild goose fan in general, but hey, to each their own.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 jgb9348 (3371) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - JUN 19, 2003
Dark, dark brown in colour with a nice dense tan head. The beer isn't completely opaque, as some red highlights show near the bottom of the glass. Very subtle aroma consisting of raisins, coffee and malt. Definate malty flavour and a very clean flavourless aftertaste. Somewhat malty throughout, but not with the best of them. A pretty thin-bodided beer for the style, but not the worst i've had by far. Not a great beer, not a bad beer...its a typical one for the style and its from Maryland!
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 fraternie (754) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 19, 2003
Pours dark/ruby-red but seems a bit thin in body. Thin head. Malty chocolate aroma, not overwhelmingly robust. Malt is roasted, with typical predictable chocolate notes dominating. Clean, crisp, dry finish. Enjoyable but not incredibly rich malt, a bit of a thin finish. Average for the style I suppose, middle of the pack.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Vac (2420) - Capistrano Beach, California, USA - MAY 27, 2003
Pours with a very dark red-brown body topped by a thick tan lasting head with a good amount of lace. Slightly Sweet and slightly smokey malt aroma with a chocalatey background. Somewhat weak aroma. Slightly sweet and smokey malt flavor wtih a coffeeish bitter background. The finish is midly smokey. Medium to full bodied and smooth.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Inveigler (371) - Ferndale, Michigan, USA - MAY 25, 2003
Nice dark garnet color with very little head. I could get very little aroma from this brew but there was a tad of toffee. Very malty/grainy flavor but lacked the body to back it up. Decent hop presence. A slightly above average porter.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 18, 2003
Pours a deep red color with a fluffy, light brown head. The aroma has notes of semi-sweet chocolate, pumpernickel bread and a bit of roasting. The flavor, while being rather full, is also quite light. Bready with hints of roasted chocolate. A decent beer that has a nice balance and is easy drinking. However, it is not extremely exciting.
