KawaBomber (193), New Jersey, USA May 18, 2009 12oz Bottle: Pours walnut brown w/ red highlights & a very small beige head. First thing to pop out of the aroma was roasted malt & caramel, followed by hops. First taste: Roasted malt, caramel, light hops & spices w/ a slightly metallic finish. Yay, done. surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA May 12, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours relatively clear crimson-brown, with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty, malty and slightly spicy, with some nutty and dark fruit character and citrus hops. Malty, spicy, nutty and dry flavor with some chocolate up front and a lot of citrusy hops in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, slightly astringent finish. Good solid winter warmer. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Apr 22, 2009 THOUGHTS: Nice beer, very British. A little too sweet, but the funk makes it interesting. A little barley wine-like. Yet also wee heavy-like. My bottle said the ABV was 6.3%.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium to dark, reddish amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy dark bread and caramel malt, light to moderate herbal hops, light leathery and cobweb-like yeast, apple, cherry, whiskey, candy, slight tea and lemon and slight smoke. The initial flavor was sweet and a little acidic; while the finish was a cidic an rather bitter with and average duration. There was caramel, cherry, apple, tea, herbal hops, citrus, dark bread and candy. The medium body was slightly syrupy and also oily with very fizzy carbonation and a light to moderate astringent finish. jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA Apr 19, 2009 well it had some spices, overall it was not too bad. It was a good winter beer. Hazaah!!! ben4321 (946), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 2, 2009 Rating from Feb ’09
Overall Impression:
Decent winter ale, with a toasty flavor, good effort I guess, but there’s something missing that makes it just not work quite right.
TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 22, 2009 Bottle- Dark amber brown pour, off white head. Sweet malts with a slight toast, caramel, nuts. Medium body, earthy hops, better as it warms. crash83 (7), Maryland, USA does not count Feb 13, 2009 On tap at Heroes in Annapolis, MD. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Not too heavy, with a little bit of hops. A great beer to have 3 or 4 of on a night out at the bar. I’m not going to go on with details, I’ll just say I enjoy this beer very much. CelticBrew (676), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2009 Pours a dark brown with red highlights when held to the light and a creamy off-white head. Aroma is malty, rock candy sugar and chocolate, and a bit of white grape juice scent. Very interesting smell overall. The flavour found spices, coffee, dark chocolate, and some roast to it. Medium body with a coffee aftertaste. A strange, yet tasty, english strong ale.
