MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 19, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This English-style Strong Ale relies on its generous caramel and toasted malts to satisfy the winter session drinker, before leafy hop bitterness attempts to seal the finish.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slim veil of foam sits atop the dark copper.
-Balanced is not really achieved; this is a malty session of a winter warmer.
-Some nuttiness is tasted within the malt flavors.
-Hops are few and far between; I would have liked a tad more bite in the flavor profile.
-The body is round and pleasant.
Bottle. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 15, 2009 The aroma is sweet and malty with a strong yeast factor that is like butterscotch lotion and dark fruit. The appearance is amber with a smaller sized head. The flavor is bread like with butter brown sugar, malt, and some hop bitterness. The palate is typical for the style. Overall an enjoyable beer. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jan 13, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a lacing tan head with a red body. Smells of caramel, bread, and dried fruit. Tastes of dried fruit like fig and bread, caramel, and apricot. Little bit of a bitter finish. Reminds me of a high grav. gpekar (221), Maryland, USA Jan 12, 2009 Poured a clear dark amber color with a tall tan creamy head. The head reduced fairly quickly to and 1/4", but still left a little lacing. There was a faint scent of alcohol in the aroma along with a hint of chocolate. The initial taste was of chocolate and rolled into a slightly dry bite. There was a good warmth on the finish. watson1977 (250), , Pennsylvania, USA Jan 7, 2009 malty aroma with slight sour notes and a hint of alcohol...deep opaque brown with a thin tan head and tons of co2 bubbles. tastes like a hodge podge of malts but no distinct flavors that i could discern and has a light hoppiness (fuggles and goldings seemed to dominate) in the finish that lingers on... jeff789 (357), Pennsylvania, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours a medium dark caramel with a thin head and good lacing... Slightly malty aroma with a bit of sweet toffee/caramel and a hint of dark fruits... Very Very muddled non-descript flavor... Medium bodied with a bit of an oily finish... I’ll have to try another to enjoy its complexity and earthy oakness long after the snow has melted away, because i didnt experience that... doboy (175), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Jan 5, 2009 A nice seasonal. Pours a light brown with a nice creamy head that clung to the side of the glass. Nice mix of hops and malts in the aroma. I liked the mouthfeel of this brew. The malt and hops were well balanced, and the bittering on the back side was very pleasing. A Good winter session beer! BiddleBrau (303), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Jan 3, 2009 Dark amber/brown with tan head and mild nutty aroma. Malty/nutty flavor with slight taste of spices but finishes with a slightly astringent bite. Medium body.
